It was snowing outside as my hands were freezing. Making my way towards the house I realized an important detail. Today was Christmas eve and I was out here, away from the one I love. I left her to suffer on her own, how stupid can I be. I saw a bakery store right at the corner, across the road.
As I walked into the bakery the smell of salt and crispy wood hit me, the bell chimed as a few people stared at me. I looked like hell but I didn't care much. An old lady smiled at me as I ordered a fruit cake since Janet couldn't eat sweets and a cup of coffee for myself. As I quietly stepped into the house, I heated some milk for Janet and took the stuff into the room. The first thing I noticed was that she wasn't in her bed, I looked around to find her laying on the ground. I quickly placed the stuff over the table and ran towards her. Picking her up, I laid her on the bed. Checking her pulse, I felt her body which was cold as ice. I turned the heater on the blanket in high and draped it over her. Her body temperature started to go back to normal as I sat beside her on the bed and watched her sleep. It was already 3:15 as it was about to get morning soon. I leaned back on the chair with a pillow behind my head and closed my eyes. Janet was all over my mind as soon enough sleep took over me.
**************
"Nathan! NATHAN!! P- pleasee help me, s- she will kill me!" She cried pulling my leg, her dress torn, eyes puffy from crying and lips bleeding with bruises all over her. That woman had her in chains as she tried to drag Janet toward her. In a blink of an eye, I watched that bitch stab her multiple times as life escaped Janet's eyes while I stood there unable to move or say anything.
I gasped as I jerked awake looking around me to find myself on the chair in our bedroom. I faced the clock to find its 7:36, Janet was still sleeping as I stood up and took a quick shower. I had to give her medicine to her, but I also need to get some food for her. I took the milk I bought and dumped it in the sink. I got myself some breakfast and some fruits and yogurt for her.
She was awake when I walked in, I kept the food on the table as she eyed me for a while but when my eyes met hers, she looked away.
"Merry Christmas!" I muttered as she turned to face me.
"It's Christmas?" She asked, surprised as her eyes widened.
"Yes, my dear it is. Time went by quick and we didn't realize. I brought some cake. Do you want some?" She lowered her gaze and shyly nodded her head, smiling to myself, I patted her head and stood up to grab the cake from the table. I cut it up and heated some more milk for her.
We both may have fallen back to step one and it must feel like we are losing but all I know is that I rather start again than lose her. I will be with her to start once again, feel those emotions again and go through everything together, step by step and that's because,
"Nathan, can you please take this off today? I will be right here with you." He eyed me for a while debating with himself as he sighed and took the keys out of his pocket, unlocking the cuff that was over my ankle, it wasn't hurting but it was a big bothersome. He kissed my forehead and then handed me the knife he had with him. He has been giving me a lot of these to protect myself and I every time I stuff them in the drawer at my side.
"Keep it with you. If anything happens don't hesitate to use it. Where is the taser I gave you?" I pointed towards the side drawer as he huffed and went over to get it. He placed it on a little space in between the bed and side table along with the gun and some pocket knives.
"Keep it here so you have access to it easily." He stared at me and gulped trying to think of something but all he did was closed his eyes and sat beside me. He turned on the T.V, while scrolling through the list of movies and played an animated one for us. He took some pillow to make me comfortable and cuddled with me while we got engrossed in the movie.
Nothing happened so far with the case, I was almost getting better but Nathan was getting worse day by day. I could see the dark under eyes, the scruffy beard, he didn't even take a bath for a week. He was in the room with me for 2 whole weeks. Taking in calls, looking through reports and making sure I was getting the good treatment and food. I feel like a burden but I don't know how to explain it to him that I can take care of myself. I need to fix this because everything was my fault.
