"Why don't you and I just go do it?" I asked curiously. I didn't want to be locked in the house alone with him.
"Watch your choice of words, sugar."
"We can go buy the stuff." I had to stop myself from rolling my eyes at his ridiculously crude mind.
He looked at the shopping list and shrugged. "You're right, we could. I'm going to need some condoms too, and that'd make Carson a little uncomfortable," he explained, helping me off the counter. "We'll go, but you can't leave my side."
"What? Why not?"
"I'm the King, Cara. Anyone attached to me becomes a target. But you're safe as long as you're with me."
I held up my fists threateningly. "I can protect myself."
"Punch me."
I drew my fist back and threw my momentum forward, my knuckles cracking as my hand slammed into his stomach. I nursed my sore hand to my chest, glaring at him. "That's not fair," I grumbled.
Dominic snickered, ruffling my hair, which only angered me more. "Come along, little one. Let's go to the store."
"I'm not little!"
Dominic let me handle the list, as he stood rigidly behind me, hovering over my every move. Once the cart was full of stuff, most of which was stuff I asked if he had, and most of the time his answer was no, but he let me get it. The cart was super heavy, so I assumed it would be safe to jump on the back, holding myself on it by my arms only, and gliding down the aisle.
I realized a second too late that the cart was tipping back, but thankfully Dominic was paying attention, because he caught me and slammed the cart back down on all four wheels.
"Be careful," he hissed. "Are you trying to kill yourself?"
"S-sorry."
After a few more minutes of me aimlessly throwing things into the cart, I realized two vital things I needed.
I guided us towards the feminine care aisle, and just as I turned in, Dominic yanked me to a stop. "What are you doing?"
"I need tampons and pads."
"Are you sure?"
I folded my arms across my chest. "You're afraid of feminine products?"
"Wait!" I gasped, reaching blindly for him to see if he was still there. When his chest came into contact with my palms again I relaxed a little bit. "We need a secret knock, so I know it's you."
"I'll just call sugarbaby through the door. Okay? Good. If anything happens here, scream. As loud as you can."
"Okay."
I flinched when he suddenly kissed me deeply, without any warning. And then he was gone, and the bathroom door shut and locked from the outside.
And I was left sitting on top of the grocery cart.
What felt like an hour later, but was really only ten minutes, I heard my pet name get growled through the door, followed by all the lights turning on. Dominic threw open the door, his face drawn into a scowl.
"Everything okay?" I asked nervously as he lifted me up and set me on my feet.
"Just a foolish man trying to surprise me. It was a worthless fight," he grumbled. "Andrew came and fixed the wires he cut. But the store manager is a Shifter, and has insisted he pay for our groceries."
"That's good. You won, no one got hurt. So why are you grumpy?" I quizzed.
"I'm not grumpy. I don't like people challenging me when they're weak, spineless fools."
