"Andrew, escort him out please," I commanded. Andrew didn't waste a second.
Caroline watched with guarded eyes, but I could sense her thoughts loud and clear. I was right all along, she thought to herself. I bent down and kissed the top of her head. "No one is going to take you away from me."
She sighed, shaking her head. "Think about what's best for your people."
"No. That's all I do. This once, just this once. I want to think about what I want. And I want you. C'mon, we'll finish our game and head home."
Cara asked herself a question, and her soft voice rang through my head. "Yes, sugar, we can still get ice cream after."
Cara sat on our bed, slowly and thoughtfully eating her mint chocolate chip ice cream. I was pacing, trying to think up a way to protect her. Andrew had seen the messenger out of the territory, ensuring me that the man actually didn't mean any harm. He was only there to deliver the warning to us.
"You can't go anywhere without Andrew or myself with you, understand?" I announced to my mate.
She snorted. "No way."
"Yes way."
She shot me a glare. "You told me I wasn't a prisoner. I told you that I wouldn't stand to be locked up."
"Until I know that no one is going to try and touch you, you will follow my commands. They're for your safety."
Caroline snorted again, rolling her eyes. "You're stupid."
"No, sugar, I'm protective of my girl. I don't want you in any danger." I sat beside her, leaning forward as I held her chin to kiss away the small droplet of ice cream hanging in the corner of her mouth. "I loved how happy you were tonight. That can be our tradition. Every couple weeks we go with the boys and have some friendly competition."
"I wasn't happy," Cara claimed. "I was enjoying myself for once. There's a difference."
I snickered. "You love to torture me, don't you?" I stole her cup of ice cream, taking a massive spoonful. Caroline smacked my chest, glaring daggers at me. "Maybe if you kiss me I'll think about giving it back to you."
I chuckled, letting her have it before kissing her cheek softly. "I love your pet names for me."
I heard loud cursing followed by a series of crashes downstairs, and it immediately woke me. My hands searched the sheets for Caroline desperately, and I would have had a heart attack if she didn't shout at herself.
I hustled down the stairs, trying to hold in a laugh when I spotted her sprawled onto her back, with what looked like water spilled all over her chest, a bowl of popcorn spilled onto the wet floor and in her hair. "What am I going to do with you, sugar?" I asked her.
She didn't move, just glared at me. After a couple more seconds of her laying there helplessly, I got down and helped her up, picking pieces of food out of her hair. "It's almost midnight. Why are you making popcorn?"
"Because I wanted it," she said simply, brushing herself off. "But that stupid popcorn bowl was up too high and I knocked over my water, which made me slip on the chair and fall and drop the bowl."
I chuckled, ruffling her wet hair. "You might want to go shower. I'll clean this up. Did you hit your head at all?"
"I'm fine. I'll clean it up, you go back to bed."
