Against my better judgment, I agreed. After we finished our coffee in bed, Dominic wanted to sleep a little more, so I got in the shower. Walking in the woods for several hours tends to get you a little dirty. But the scalding water soothed me, even though it made my skin slightly tender I first.
Once I finished in the shower, I changed into some black high-waisted jeans and a white tank top. I thought about blow drying my hair when I realized I never packed one. I left it at home, in my old pack. So I guess once it dried, I'd have to straighten it.
"Hey, baby," Dominic greeted, scaring me. "Sorry for making you jump. But I just wanted to tell you that it'd probably be best to throw a little something over that. It's supposed to get rainy today and a little cold."
I gave him a nod and a small smile, tucking my hair behind my ears. "There's some women who will be there that you might get along with. They're around your age, I think. You can sit with them, if you'd like, instead of with me."
"Is that appropriate?" I quizzed. "Like, won't it be weird?"
"How could a queen getting to know her people be considered weird?" He replied, shedding his shirt suddenly, which I hadn't realized he put on. Then his sweats followed suit.
I glanced away hurriedly, turning my back on him and trying not to see him in the mirror. "You could have told you to leave," I mumbled, twirling some hair around my finger.
Dominic came up from behind me, laughing. "I didn't want you to leave. I don't mind if you see me naked. Plus I love how much it makes you blush," he claimed, kissing my red cheek. "I like it when you're calm and obedient."
My eyes automatically rolled. "When you say that, it makes me not want to 'obey'."
He nuzzled his nose into my hair and inhaled deeply. "You will be the death of me, I swear."
Dominic had a knowing, wicked grin on his face. He had found my weakness. Making friends. We were standing just outside the dining room, where we could hear his pack conversing loudly. He wanted me to sit with other women my age and get to know them, create some friendships while Alfie and I worked our stuff out.
"If this is what it takes to make you be quiet, I need to get you in public more often," Dominic teased. When he saw how my brows furrowed, he kissed my temple gently. "Caroline, you'll be just fine. I'll be only a few feet away and if you decide you're done conversing, you can sit with me again."
My unease grew. "Oh. O-of course you have a choice. I just thought it'd be nice to meet the women like me-"
"Like you?" the same girl cackled.
Another girl, this time with mousy brown hair and green eyes gasped. "Raven, knock it off. You're being awful. Alpha Dominic will be in a rage if he heard-"
"Dominic won't know anything unless I tell him, and I won't. I'm sorry, you're right, we are very different. I just meant my age. I'm alone here and haven't really met anyone new yet. So I was advised that talking to you guys was a good start," I explained sincerely.
Raven had one brow raised at me before she started laughing loudly, drawing attention to this side of the room. I happened to glance at Dominic, who was watching for my reaction. So he did know what was going on. Curse Shifter's increased hearing. "So she's not only a slut but a stupid bitch too, huh?" she said to the girl next to her, who giggled into her hand while nodding. "Listen, you pathetic brat. Frankly, I don't want anything to do with you. Dominic should have screwed you and dropped you just like he does all of his human conquests. Everyone else might be cowardly enough to pretend to care about you, but I'm not going to be fake. I'll rejoice when Dominic gets his head out of his ass and sees the trash that you really are."
