“Yes, Mr. Frederic,” Dennis replied.

A fire ignited in Aaron’s chest. He cursed inwardly, overcome with the urge to take off his shoe and shove it in Frederic’s mouth. He had intended to take Thaddeus away quietly to minimize the impact, but this old fool had to storm in and turn a small problem into a catastrophe. What a liability! If Hamilton had just one more child, this oaf would never have been anywhere near the reins of the family business.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Frederic, but I’m taking him with me today, no matter what.”

Just then, three plainclothes officers emerged from the crowd, flashing their badges. When Aaron saw their leader, a man with a distinct air of arrogance, he clenched his jaw. It was the captain of the second detective squad, his long-time rival, Logan.

“And who are you?” Frederic asked, looking at the man in confusion.

“A long-time colleague of Captain Ashbourne,” Logan said with a smirk, glancing at Aaron. “Due to the close relationship between Captain Ashbourne’s sister and Mr. Thaddeus, there is a clear conflict of interest. As of now, I will be taking full charge of Mr. Thaddeus’s case. Captain Ashbourne, you and your men can leave.”

His condescending attitude infuriated Aaron’s team, but there was nothing they could do.

“We don’t make arrests without evidence,” Logan stated flatly.

An hour later, Evadne and Jason were back in the president’s office.

“How could this happen?!” she finally snapped, grabbing a coffee mug from her desk and hurling it against the wall.

Jason knew then that Ms. Evadne was truly furious. Enraged.

“Mr. Ashbourne called me first, not wanting to interrupt your work. He explained the situation. I knew it was serious, so I notified you immediately,” Jason said in a low, somber tone. “He’s been taken off the case, so he can’t intervene much. I heard Mr. Thaddeus is already at the station, where they’ll conduct a urine or hair follicle test.”

Evadne gritted her teeth, pressing a hand to her feverish forehead. Her voice was tight with anger. “The medication Thaddeus has been taking contains a banned substance. Even if he wasn’t taking illegal drugs, the test will brand him as an addict. Jason, do you know what that means?”

Jason opened his mouth, but no words came out.
