“Me? Not like it?” Naomi pouted. “I love it, Chris.”

“Thank goodness.” Chris smiled widely. “I was confused about what gift to give you. You received so many gifts. Even though I know a gift from me would definitely impress you, it’s still a little different.”

Chris’s high confidence made Naomi click her tongue in annoyance.

Naomi turned several more pages until she found several small envelopes tucked into the back. Each one had Chris’s handwriting on it.

For our first day as husband and wife, on our honeymoon.

For the day when we have a fight.

For the day when you feel life is too heavy.

For the day when you feel that I no longer love you.

Naomi stopped at the last page.

For the day when we are old.

Her chest felt tight. She slowly raised her face. "Why did you make all of this?"

Chris looked at her for a long moment before answering. "Because I don't know what our life will be like. What we'll go through together."

Naomi held the journal more tightly.

"I don't know if we'll always have easy days. Maybe we'll argue someday. Maybe there will be days when you're angry with me. Maybe there will be days when we're both exhausted and don't know what to say."

He paused for a moment.

"But I want you to have something that reminds you that I chose you even before any of that happens."

Naomi's eyes began to fill with tears. "Chris."

"I don't want to give you something just so my gift looks bigger than what your family gave you." His smile was faint. "I know I won't win against the Devereux family in that regard."

Naomi laughed softly through her tears. "You definitely won't win."

"I know, but I'm still a Miller. Taking care of you and showering you with gifts so you never feel like you're lacking anything is still my responsibility."

"Somehow, my being moved by you sometimes has to be pushed aside because of that overconfident attitude of yours, Chris."

The man laughed, but then he took Naomi's hand and held it. "I just wanted to give you something that no one else could give you."

Naomi looked at the journal again. "And the blank pages?"

Chris nodded toward the several final pages that had not yet been written on. "Those are for us."

"For us?" Naomi repeated, still not understanding.

"For everything we haven't experienced yet." Chris's voice grew softer. "Our first journey as husband and wife. The first home we live in. The days when we're happy. Even the days when we argue and eventually make up."
