She could laugh when Grace teased her, listen to Riana’s stories, chat with Naomi, or simply sit with the others and enjoy the atmosphere of the home. Even when Josh bothered her several times by talking about his game, Eli could only laugh and tell him to stop being so overconfident.

A few days after returning to campus, Eli’s life slowly returned to normal.

That afternoon, Eli was talking to one of her classmates in the library. They were sitting at one of the long tables covered with books and laptops.

“How’s the assignment for this afternoon’s class, Eli? Have you finished working on it?” her friend asked softly while tidying the stack of books on the library table.

Eli nodded as she calmly closed her laptop.

“Already finished. I had to cut back on my sleep to finish it. This assignment really took up a lot of my time.”

“Good Lord, me too. I had a hard time with it and almost gave up,” her friend said softly, followed by a small laugh. However, a moment later, her expression became more cautious. “Honestly, I was worried you’d stay down for too long thinking about the gossip about you.”

She stared intently at Eli, as if wanting to make sure the girl was truly all right.

Eli smiled faintly. There was not the slightest trace of sadness on her face.

“Don’t worry. I’m not going to sacrifice my studies for someone who never even wanted to understand me. Instead, you’d better study harder if you want to beat me.”

Eli and her friend laughed softly.

“I have no intention of beating you, Eli. Besides being diligent, you really do have above-average abilities,” her friend praised sincerely.

“It’s not like that. I got all my grades through hard work. That’s why I spend most of my time in the library, the dorm, or the bookstore.”
