Chapter 675

Morning crept slowly into the hotel suite, still wrapped in silence. The heavy curtains had not been fully opened, leaving only pale lines of light stretched across the floor. In the guest room, Naomi woke with ragged breaths, her body drenched in cold sweat. Her hands clutched the sheets tightly, as though she were still trying to pull herself away from something chasing her.

She had only just realized she was sitting half upright in bed when the sound of a door opening softly came from beside her.

“Naomi?”

Lydia stepped in quickly. Her hair was still loose and messy, clearly fresh from sleep, but the moment she saw the girl’s condition, worry filled her face.

“Oh my God, what happened to you? Did you have a nightmare?”

Naomi turned toward her with blank eyes for a few seconds, then slowly nodded. Her throat felt dry. “I’m sorry… did I wake you?”

“If you scream while crying, yes, that’s usually enough to wake someone.” Lydia sat on the edge of the bed without hesitation and reached for the glass of water on the bedside table. “Drink first.”

Naomi accepted it with trembling hands. A few drops spilled onto the back of her fingers.

Lydia watched her carefully, trying to offer the sense of safety Naomi likely hadn’t felt in a very long time. “Still about last night?”

Naomi shook her head faintly. “No.” She drew in a long breath, trying to steady herself. “It was about… something that happened a long time ago.”

Lydia didn’t push. “If you want to talk, I’ll listen. If not, just tell me when you’re ready for breakfast.”

Naomi lowered her gaze to the water in her glass. “My uncle… came in the middle of the night.” Her voice was soft and hoarse. “He said I had to leave immediately. I thought it meant I was finally going to see my father and mother again… and my older sister too. But he barely spoke. He explained nothing.”

Her fingers tightened around the glass. “I asked where the rest of the family would go. He only said I had to obey him. Never argue.”

Lydia stayed quiet, letting the girl find her own breath again, waiting for whatever else needed to be released from the grip of that nightmare.

“He took me to the airport. Then… he left me with a woman who didn’t even smile at me.” Naomi gave a small laugh, but it tasted bitter. “I was still little. I thought my uncle would come back in a few minutes.”

“But he didn’t.” Naomi shook her head. Her eyes began to glisten. “He never came back.”

The room fell silent.

Lydia slowly stroked the back of Naomi’s hand.

“The woman was strict, cold, and almost always angry,” Naomi continued. “But she handled my papers,

The wom made me go to school, taught me the language, and helped me survive in Germany.” She swallowed hard. “I hated her for years. Now I think… maybe she just didn’t know how to be gentle.”

Lydia gave her a faint smile. “There are a lot of people like that.”

“Maybe.” Naomi returned a small, sorrowful smile. “But out of everything… the part that hurts the most, the part I still don’t know who to blame for…” She lifted her head and looked at Lydia with eyes full of loss.

“My family… they’re all gone. They left me in a country that was completely foreign to me, and there was nothing I could do except survive.”

Lydia reached for her and pulled her into a tight embrace. She let the girl cry, let tears soak into her pajama top, and gently rubbed Naomi’s shoulder again and again until the sobs began to ease.

“Thank you,” Naomi said through her tears. She loosened the embrace a little and pulled back.

“I’m glad you talked to me.” Lydia smiled sincerely.

Naomi glanced at her. “Do you always treat strangers like this?”

Lydia frowned in confusion. “Like what?”

“Talk so much.”

That made Lydia laugh. “Come on, let’s have breakfast.” She held out her hand to Naomi. “After crying, the body needs energy to recover.”

Naomi almost laughed.

Almost.

As Lydia took Naomi’s hand, she thought-perhaps it was only her imagination-that the girl’s skin felt warmer than before. Still, Lydia tried to ignore it. She assumed the fever would go down once Naomi had eaten something.

A few minutes later, they were seated at the small dining table near the window. Toast, fruit, eggs, and warm tea had already been set out. Naomi still seemed hesitant to touch any of it, while Lydia calmly cut fruit as though their morning were unfolding like any ordinary day.

“You need to eat,” Lydia said. “If you don’t, I’ll be offended after ordering all this.”

“I’m not hungry.”
