Naomi had thought the hardest part of that evening would be facing Silas Evermont.

It turned out she was wrong.

After taking her seat at the table that had been prepared for her, the atmosphere gradually returned to normal. The guests resumed their conversations. Music drifted softly from a corner of the hall. Servants moved back and forth carrying drinks and hors d'oeuvres for the attendees.

From time to time, Naomi spoke with several people she had met at the previous banquet. Mostly exchanging pleasantries and asking how they had been, though it seemed that most of them were trying to become familiar with her.

Quite a few of them also tried to find out who the man accompanying her that evening was. Some asked directly. Others took a more roundabout approach before eventually arriving at the same question.

But Naomi merely smiled and redirected the conversation, just as Lydia had taught her a few hours earlier.

“Don’t tell anyone until you feel it’s necessary.”

“Let them assume whatever they want.”

“Your only job is to enjoy the party.”

Naomi tried to do exactly that, though it was not easy.

This was the first time she had attended an event like this without Cale or Lydia by her side.

Over the past few weeks, Naomi had unknowingly become too accustomed to having the two of them nearby. Accustomed to knowing that no matter what happened, there was always someone she could look for in the middle of a crowd.

Tonight was different. For the first time, she truly had to stand on her own. Fortunately, Chris was there. Even if the man was annoying ninety percent of the time. The remaining ten percent was useful enough to keep Naomi from feeling completely out of place.

Occasionally, Chris would comment on some of the guests passing by their table. Sometimes it was about someone’s expression. Sometimes it was about a business relationship he thought was far too complicated. And sometimes it was simply an unimportant remark that made Naomi want to kick him under the table.

If only Cale and Lydia could have attended this event as well, she would not have been this tense. Unfortunately... they had matters far more important to attend to.

Then she noticed something. The sound of conversation around them gradually diminished. And it was as if something made her feel... strange.

Without realizing it, she directed her gaze toward a certain point, and it seemed several other people were looking in the same direction as well. And when Naomi followed their line of sight, her heart seemed to stop beating for a fraction of a second.
