Naomi almost laughed.

Uncomfortable?

That word felt far too mild to describe what had actually happened. Far too simple to explain how this man had once frightened her to the point where she could no longer think clearly. But Naomi chose to remain silent. She did not want to give Falcon the reaction he was looking for.

Because the longer she observed him, the more obvious something else became.

Falcon was not apologizing for her sake alone.

Every word that came out of his mouth was loud enough for the people around them to hear. Clear enough to draw the attention of anyone who had previously been watching from a distance. Naomi could even sense the atmosphere around their table gradually changing. Some conversations stopped. More eyes began to turn toward them. And before they realized it, they had become the center of attention at the party.

That was when Naomi understood.

Falcon was building an image.

He was rewriting the story that some people might have known. Transforming the negative impression attached to him into the image of a man who acknowledged his mistakes and had come to make amends. “I hope you can give me a chance to make things right,” Falcon continued in a tone far gentler than usual.

The discomfort in Naomi’s chest grew stronger. Not because of the apology, but because she was beginning to understand where this conversation was headed.

There was no way Falcon was doing all of this without a purpose. There was no way he had crossed a hall full of guests just to say he was sorry and then leave.

And Naomi’s suspicion was confirmed when the man spoke again.

“Perhaps we could talk in private.”

Naomi immediately lifted her gaze. For the first time that night, she was completely certain that the apology was not Falcon’s real objective. Everything that had happened since he approached her table had merely been an opening move toward something he actually wanted.

“Ahem!” Chris cleared his throat, drawing Falcon’s attention toward him. “Sorry? What exactly did you just say?”

Chris leaned back slightly in his chair. Since the arrival of this stranger, he had been trying to stay calm and assess the situation. His expression remained relaxed, even too relaxed for someone who had just interrupted a conversation in the middle of a hall filled with important guests.

Falcon looked at him without blinking. “I only want to speak with Miss Naomi in private.”
