Alpha Team quickly spread out across the yard. The two guards who had been standing by the garage only realized they were there when the sound of footsteps began coming from behind the shrubs.

"Intruders!" The shout shattered the silence.

One of the guards hurriedly reached for the weapon tucked into the back of his waistband. But before he could raise his pistol, a powerful kick slammed into his wrist, sending the gun flying several meters across the paving stones.

The other man tried to run toward the front door of the house.

Bang!

The gunshot cracked through the air.

The bullet struck the ground directly in front of his feet, forcing him to stop abruptly. Within seconds, two Alpha Team members had tackled him to the ground. His wrists were twisted behind his back before steel handcuffs snapped shut around them.

"The front is secure!"

Chris didn't waste a second. He immediately charged into the house with three other team members, while Brandon made sure no one escaped through the rear.

The front door was breached without difficulty.

BANG!

The house was instantly filled with the sound of Obsidian Circle operatives' footsteps.

"Clear!"

"First floor, clear!"

"The kitchen is clear!"

Report after report continued coming through the headsets.

Chris swept his pistol across every corner of the room. The living room was in disarray. Several chairs had been pushed out of place, as though they had only recently been used. Two cups of tea still sat on the table.

He walked over to the table. His fingertips touched the surface of one of the cups, and it was still warm. His expression changed instantly.

"They just left."

Chris quickened his pace toward the second floor. Several Alpha Team members immediately spread out to search every room upstairs, making sure no one was still hiding inside. Chris headed straight for a door not far from the staircase. The moment he pushed it open and saw the room beyond, his breath caught.

A wooden chair stood in the middle of the room.

Its armrests were still bound with nylon rope that had not yet been removed. A rumpled gray blanket lay on the floor, while a bottle of sedatives had rolled to a stop near the chair's legs. Some of the pills were still inside. A bowl and shattered pieces of a drinking glass lay scattered across the floor, as though something had happened in the room only moments before.

Chris slowly crouched down. Wedged between the rough rope bindings, he spotted several strands of long black hair still caught in the knots. He carefully picked one up with his fingertips.

A few seconds later, his gaze shifted to the corner of the room. A cream-colored scarf lay on the floor. Chris recognized it immediately. "That's... Naomi's."

He picked up the scarf and slowly clenched it in his hand. The faint trace of perfume still lingering on the fabric caused his jaw to tighten. Every piece of evidence in the room pointed to the same conclusion.

Naomi had been there.
