Silas walked in.

He was still wearing the same black suit as he had been that morning. His hair was perfectly combed, his expression calm, as though the chaos unfolding outside had done nothing to disturb his mood. His eyes rested on Lydia only briefly before shifting to Jasper.

"I heard you called for a doctor," he asked without hesitation.

"I've already sent someone to bring one."

Silas let out a short breath before chuckling softly. "Just because she said she was in pain?"

"He didn't complain." Jasper met Silas's gaze without hesitation.

"Then that's even better," Silas cut in.

He walked past Jasper unhurriedly before stopping beside the window. His eyes settled on the stretch of forest outside, as though this conversation wasn't important enough to make him turn around.

"As long as she can still breathe," he said casually, "she's still useful."

Those words made Jasper's fingers slowly curl into fists at his sides. "What if her condition gets worse?"

Only then did Silas turn around. The two men's eyes met, locking onto each other without either willing to yield.

"So?" The corner of Silas's lips curved into a faint smile. "What if she dies?"

Jasper had never imagined Silas would say something like that so effortlessly.

And Silas continued. "If she dies, then we've lost one card." He shrugged as though he were talking about something easily replaced. "We'll find another."

For the first time, Jasper felt his chest tighten.

"To you," he said, his voice still calms but much heavier than before, "everyone is just a tool?"

Silas looked at him for a few seconds. "Then what do you think they are?"

"Human beings." The answer came without the slightest hesitation.

Silas chuckled softly. "It seems you've started to change."

Jasper didn't flinch. "I'm not the one who's changed."

The smile slowly faded from Silas's face. "You're the one who's begun to lose sight of the line." Jasper never took his eyes off the man standing before him.

The room fell abruptly silent.
