He made no attempt to pursue them in haste. It was precisely that calmness that began to make Silas uneasy. He continued backing away, yet his eyes never left Cale, who was now advancing toward him at an unhurried pace.

Silas let out a quiet chuckle despite his increasingly labored breathing. "I have to admit, your composure is truly remarkable, Cale," he said with a laugh. "Meanwhile, Lydia could be taking her last breath."

Cale gave no response whatsoever.

"You know what's the funniest part?" Silas limped backward. "Everyone thinks you're a savior." A sly grin spread across his face. "But every time someone needs you, you always show up after it's already too late."

Cale kept walking forward. His expression remained flat, completely unaffected.

Seeing that cold reaction, Silas's smile began to fade. He clenched his jaw, trying to provoke his opponent.

"Lydia."

Still no response.

"Naomi."

Silence.

Silas frowned. He had deliberately spoken both names to provoke Cale's anger as he had before. Yet the man standing before him had become even harder to read. For the first time, Silas felt his words had lost their power.

Behind Cale, Vincent observed the change carefully. He had known his superior for far too long. The quieter Cale became, the more dangerous the situation was for the man standing in front of him.

Silas stopped retreating when his back was nearly against the door leading to the rear staircase. He glanced briefly toward the exit before looking back at Cale. There was still a chance, as long as he could create a little space.
