Darkness.
Then... the sound of dripping water. It echoed slowly from somewhere, breaking the suffocating silence. Between the droplets came the sound of heavy, shallow breathing, as though every breath required a struggle.
Naomi still couldn't open her eyes. Her consciousness drifted somewhere between dreams and reality, while a piercing chill slowly crept across her left cheek, which was pressed against the damp concrete floor.
The smell of rust filled her nostrils, mixed with the faint but unmistakable odor of fuel that was strong enough to make it difficult to breathe. Far above, a distant rumble gradually grew louder before fading away again.
The roar was so deep that the floor beneath her seemed to vibrate softly with it.
Her eyelids twitched. Her head throbbed violently. Her throat felt as dry as if it were filled with dust. She tried to take a deeper breath, but a wave of nausea immediately rose within her. Fragments of images flashed rapidly through her mind.
Fragments of memories flashed rapidly through her mind. A black van. Falcon's face twisted with anger when Naomi refused to obey his orders. The glint of a syringe. Then everything sank back into emptiness.
Naomi blinked several times until her vision finally came into focus. A dull concrete ceiling greeted her. Several metal pipes stretched overhead, while a dim light hanging in one corner of the room flickered softly, as though it could go out at any moment.
She struggled to lift herself up. The world around her immediately spun. Naomi held her breath and closed her eyes for a few seconds before trying again. This time, she managed to sit up. Her palms touched the cold, damp floor. Just as she was about to stand, something yanked hard on her left leg.
Clang.
The sound of metal striking metal echoed through the room.
Naomi turned her head sharply. An iron shackle encircled her ankle, connected to a short chain locked around a steel pipe embedded in the floor. She could move only a few steps. Gritting her teeth, she pulled at the chain with all her strength. The metal didn't budge in the slightest.
“Child?” The faint voice made Naomi's entire body freeze.
She quickly turned toward the dark corner of the room. Behind a stack of wooden crates and worn burlap sacks, an elderly woman was leaning weakly against the wall. Her graying hair was disheveled. Dried blood formed a long streak across her left temple. Her face was pale, yet her eyes still held a strange sense of calm.
“Thank goodness... you're finally awake,” she whispered softly.
Naomi shifted closer as far as the chain would allow. “Ma'am? Are... are you all right?”
The woman gave a small nod despite the pain etched across her face. “I'm still holding on.”
“Who did this?”
The woman's gaze immediately shifted toward the iron door at the far end of the room. “Keep your voice down.”
