"What do you mean by that?"

Alexander sat down across from me, his brow furrowed in confusion.

"Throwing a tantrum for a little while is fine, but dragging it out?"

"Not so much."

"You're not a cute little girl who gets away with being difficult anymore."

Of course, I wasn't.

If he didn't feel at least a little guilty right now, he wouldn't even have this much patience for me.

The only person he had patience for was Marie.

"Relax, I have no interest in making a scene," I said, pushing the divorce papers closer to him.

He hesitated, flipping through the pages, his expression growing more serious.

I didn't get it.

He knew these terms worked entirely in his favor.

What was there to hesitate about?

Instead, he threw the papers down in front of me, clearly angry.

"I've told you a thousand times."

"Don't bring personal emotions into work."

I met his gaze and said evenly, "We're not at work right now."

"And you say you're not just throwing a fit?"

"This is just another way to vent, Claire."

"You should really start acting like an adult."

He crossed his arms, looking just like he did the first day I started at the firm—condescending, overly critical, picking apart my work.
