I kept typing, answering lazily, "A divorce agreement."

"Just making some final tweaks."

The situation felt strange.

In the past, if Alexander ever offered to drive me somewhere, I'd drop everything immediately.

No matter how urgent, nothing was more important than avoiding his irritation.

This was the first time I'd made him wait.

Hearing "divorce agreement" made his expression shift slightly.

I hit a snag in the wording and asked, "How do you phrase it so neither party can harass the other after the divorce?"

"Wait… what?"

Alexander, a nationally recognized attorney, was suddenly at a loss for words.

Then he tried to change the subject.

"You're a criminal defense lawyer."

"Why are you so into divorce law all of a sudden?"

I was about to answer when his phone rang.

Marie.

While he took the call, I stayed busy.

I saved the document and went inside to borrow a printer from the staff.

Watching the pages of the divorce agreement slide out, I felt pretty damn good.

Alexander, still outside, was pacing while talking on the phone, looking increasingly impatient.

Once the papers were signed, I'd quit my job, move firms.

Maybe even leave the city.

The thought made me smile.

Alexander saw my grin and, for some reason, smiled too—probably assuming I was in a good mood.

I set the divorce agreement on the table and said softly, "No time like the present."

"How about we sign today?"

I tapped the document.

"Don't worry, the asset division is very generous to you."

Alexander's smile vanished instantly.
