Martha was a bit of a rough diamond, but she had a heart of gold, and it showed in the way she cared for her parents.

Logan gently rubbed the tip of his nose. "You know Liz always buys two of everything she likes."

"Oh right! But did she buy two pairs of these shoes too? They look pretty average," Martha mused, still thinking about it.

Logan bent down and placed a spare pair of slippers by her feet. She stopped dwelling on Lisa's shoes and smiled. "You're such a thoughtful person. Joelle's lucky to have you."

He raised an eyebrow. "What if it were your daughter with me?" he thought to himself.

Martha walked toward the kitchen, talking as she went. "Living alone in such a big house must feel so empty. You should come back and stay with us."

"Martha, just make something simple like pasta." Logan watched her back, not wanting her to stay too long.

"Simple? You've never been picky since you were a kid—always kept things easy. But life is three meals a day, and if there's one thing that shouldn't be skimped on, it's that." She entered the kitchen and tied an apron.

Then she noticed something on the counter and paused. "Did you drink milk last night?"

Logan didn't drink milk. He had a slight allergy to dairy. He could handle small amounts in food, but drinking plain milk was out of the question.

It was Lisa's. He had given it to her before bed last night to replenish her energy but hadn't had time to clean up the cup.

"It wasn't me." He realized how challenging it was to keep this secret relationship under wraps.

Martha chuckled. "It was Joelle, wasn't it?"

Logan didn't answer. "Martha, you start on breakfast. I'll go upstairs and freshen up."

"Go ahead. I'll call you when it's ready." She treated him like her own son, always looking out for him.
