Rowdy?
What was that?
As the sound grew closer, Logan had a bad feeling. He quickly wrapped himself in his bathrobe and hurried to the door just as Martha pushed it open.
His tall frame tried hard to block the view behind him. "Martha, what are you looking for?"
"Rowdy, the puppy I just brought over. I don't know where it ran off to," Martha said, craning her neck to look past him. "Did it follow you into your room?"
"No, I came up alone, and I locked the door," Logan firmly denied.
"That's strange," she muttered, preparing to search elsewhere.
He was about to close the door when Lisa let out a soft whimper from the bed. Martha seemed to hear it and turned back, but Logan quickly shut the door.
Even so, Martha knocked again. "Logan, I think I heard a puppy whimpering in your room. It must be Rowdy in there."
"No, you heard wrong. It was just my phone notification." His tall body leaning against the door to prevent Martha from barging in.
"I'm sure I heard it just now," she grumbled as she walked away.
Logan let out a sigh of relief and glanced at the bed. Lisa had kicked off the blankets and was still sleeping soundly. She was never one to sleep so deeply, but last night, he had drained every bit of her energy.
He walked over and pulled the blankets back over her. To prevent any further unexpected incidents, he quickly headed downstairs.
What he didn't know was that as soon as he left, Lisa opened her eyes. She had woken up when she recognized Martha's voice. It happened right after she let out that whimper—one that Martha had mistaken for Rowdy's.
Downstairs, Martha had already found Rowdy and was playing with him. "Logan, Dad's blood pressure has been high lately, and Mom's health isn't great either. They've been really hoping you and Joelle would get married soon. Maybe you could discuss it with Joelle and make some plans?"
"Not right now," Logan replied, sipping his oat milk.
Martha was about to say something when he added, "I'll arrange for someone to take care of their health. That's not a reason for me to rush into marriage. Besides..."
He paused. "I..."
Before he could finish, a loud thud came from upstairs. The sound startled Martha so much that she stopped petting the puppy. She looked up toward the second floor. "What was that?"
Logan didn't know what happened either. He put down his utensils and rushed upstairs.
The noise sounded like something had fallen. Breaking things wasn't a big deal—what really worried him was whether the little coward hiding away had gotten hurt.
