"Look, Josie, we'll figure out what's going on with Rowan, okay? Just try to relax," I said, trying to calm her down.

Josie responded with a noncommittal grunt, picking up her knife and fork to slice into her steak as if she were carving up Sydney herself, every cut a silent accusation.

Meanwhile, Sydney was holed up in her home office, a smug smile playing on her lips as she watched the movement in the box of tarantulas – her own little secret weapon. "Oliver, Josefina, do you really think you can mess with my plans?" she sneered, her voice dripping with venom.

Her smirk was interrupted by a servant's whisper, "Ma'am, Rowan is back."

Together, they went to the living room where Rowan stood, looking every bit the weary traveler he was.

"Rowan, you're back! Hungry? How about I whip up some of your favorite – a grilled cheese sandwich?" Sydney offered, her voice laced with a sweetness that belied her true nature.

Rowan just looked at her, the memory of being publicly humiliated by her making his stomach turn as if he'd swallowed flies.

"No thanks," he mumbled, collapsing onto the couch.

The sight of Rowan, slightly more robust than in his younger days, made Sydney inwardly cringe at his now less-than-dashing appearance.

Still with feigned tenderness, she prodded, "Where did you wander off to today? You look a bit off. Did you run into Oliver? Did he upset you again?"

"I didn't see him. I'm just tired, heading to bed," Rowan replied, his voice heavy as he trudged upstairs.

Sydney let out a cold laugh once he was out of earshot. She didn't need his confirmation to know he'd been up to no good – probably sneaking around with some floozy.

What a waste of a man!

"Check if Oliver and Josefina saw him today," Sydney instructed her servant under her breath, desperate to know who Rowan had really been with.
