Dr. Mark’s little power move did not go over well with Dr. Liam, Dr. Sterling, and the others who had already been deep in conversation with Maggie.

Dr. Sterling shot him a look. “Liam, I wasn’t going to stop you from coming over to say hi, but we’re in the middle of something here. Could you at least wait until we’re done?”

There were other heavy hitters from the Al world standing nearby, all waiting for their own chance to talk to Maggie. They couldn’t help jumping in.

“Seriously, Liam, ever heard of a line? Have some decency and get to the back.”

Julia looked away.

She took a slow, deep breath and pulled herself together.

Both Rex and Yves had been keeping an eye on Julia. They’d watched her light up trying to engage Dr. Mark, watched him brush her off and then practically trip over himself to get to Maggie. They saw the whole thing.

Over at Maggie’s end of the room, she was completely ringed in by some of the biggest names in academia and tech. Even if you made a point of not looking in that direction, you could still feel it. circles.

It was obvious that Dr. Mark and the others had come specifically for her. That alone said everything about how they regarded her abilities.

Watching Julia’s quiet hurt against the backdrop of Maggie’s moment in the spotlight, neither Rex nor Yves looked particularly happy about it.

Especially Yves.

If Dr. Mark and the rest were that eager to pick Maggie’s brain, then fine, her skills were clearly the real deal. But every bit of that had been built on opportunities that should have gone to Julia. Maggie only got where she was because she stepped into a door that was meant for someone else.

If Julia had been the one to enter Cole’s world from the start, if she had been the one with Johnny and Nolan in her corner, guiding her and backing her up, someone with her raw talent and academic foundation would have run circles around Maggie.

Rex and Yves both looked like they were about to set down what they were doing and go check on Julia. But Franklin, still in the middle of his own conversation nearby, had also clocked the shift in her expression. He turned to her. “Hey. You okay? You seem off.”

Julia snapped back to the present and forced a small smile. “I’m fine, just thinking about something.”

Franklin still had things to wrap up with the people he was talking to. He took her at her word and didn’t push.

Rex and Yves both stayed put.

A female colleague standing near Yves had noticed him watching Julia. She said, almost wistfully, “Is that the junior you used to know? Her boyfriend is incredible. And he actually pays attention to her like that. Must be nice.”

Yves made a low sound of agreement.

Yeah. Even if Julia had lost out on a huge opportunity career-wise, she still had Franklin. Someone who was exceptional in every way and actually showed up for her. Whatever else was going on, at least her love life was good.

The conference ran two days. Maggie, Johnny, Franklin, and Julia had all arrived early that first morning, but all four of them had managed to go the entire time without exchanging a single word with each other.

It wasn’t until lunch that things shifted. Whoever was putting together a meal that afternoon reached out to Maggie. Johnny, and Franklin all at once.
