He glanced at the message, and the determination in his eyes vanished. "I have to go," he said, his voice laced with urgency. "Simone's birthday isn't over yet."

The ME sighed. "Is there anything on the body that could help us identify her?"

"Bone marrow. We'll have to extract DNA from the bone marrow."

The ME's expression turned strange. "Do you have a DNA sample from your sister?"

Lucas's protective instincts kicked in. "Why would we need that? I'm not giving you Simone's DNA."

"I'm talking about your real sister, Lydia!"

Lucas froze, then scoffed.

"Her? No, I don't. Why?"

The ME looked at him with disappointment. "You're young, Lucas, you don't understand. But if something were to happen to your sister, you'd regret this."

Lucas snorted. "Regret? For that freak? You're kidding, right? Just tell me why you need her DNA. Did she commit a crime or something?"

"It seems you don't care about your sister at all. She contacted us three days ago, claiming she had a lead on your parents' case. Then she disappeared."

"I'd be happy if she were dead!"

He stormed out, leaving the ME shaking his head in dismay.

Tears streamed down my face, even though I could no longer feel them. I wanted to scream, to tell him the truth, but my voice was lost to the ether.

Lucas, it was you who killed Mom and Dad, not me. And I took the blame, protected you, because I was terrified of what you might do if you knew the truth.

But now, I was the villain in his eyes, the monster he couldn't forgive.
