The two of them kept throwing jabs at each other, every word sharp enough to cut. You could practically feel the tension in the air, like a storm about to break. Tristan’s eyes went cold. Andrew tried to act casual, but you could tell from the look in his eyes that he was anything but.

Tristan eventually took the lead, pulling rank as Emily’s boyfriend. He put on his most official, boyfriend-in-charge attitude and said, “Mr. Lane, thanks for looking after my girlfriend while I was gone, but you don’t have to worry about her anymore. I’ve got everything at work sorted, so I won’t be leaving her alone again. From now on, I’ll take care of her, so you can stop stressing.”

Andrew’s hands clenched tight. That old, familiar feeling of losing out when it came to Emily hit him hard. Now Tristan was her boyfriend, and he was just... nothing. He had no right to argue, no reason to be jealous, not really.

Trying not to let Tristan have the last word, Andrew answered in a low, cool voice, “Just make sure you really can keep her by your side.”

Tristan just smirked. “No need to worry. We’re great together.”

After all that back and forth, both of them were fuming. Neither could stand the other. Tristan turned and walked out, leaving the hospital room empty except for Andrew.

Andrew leaned back, his eyes lowered, trying to hide what he was feeling. His hands curled into fists, knuckles white. Underneath it all, he was burning with anger and frustration he couldn’t show.

He grabbed his phone and called his assistant, telling him to look into the women around Tristan, especially Cynthia Rivera and Hilaria Vargas.

Tristan’s nerves gave way to happiness as he reached out and pulled her into his arms, gently cupping the back of her head. “I came home early. I missed you. It feels like forever. Did you miss me too?”

Emily’s hands gripped the fabric of his shirt, her emotions all tangled up. After leaving Andrew’s room, she’d taken a wrong turn and doubled back, only to see Tristan heading into Andrew’s room. The timing was too close. He must have seen her coming out.

She knew Tristan rarely brought it up, but he was always a little uneasy about her past with Andrew. He never really let his guard down around him, always worried something might spark between them again. Emily knew that would never happen, but she understood why Tristan might worry. Now, seeing him come out of Andrew’s room, she couldn’t help but worry he thought exactly that.
