She knew she needed to explain herself. She hadn’t done anything wrong and had always kept her distance from Andrew. Tristan deserved to hear the truth.

When she didn’t answer right away, Tristan leaned in, his voice low. “Did you miss me?”

Emily pressed her lips together, then nodded just a little. “Yeah.” She never knew how to put her feelings into words. After admitting it, she went quiet and gave Tristan a gentle push. “There’s something I want to talk about.”

Tristan was still grinning from her simple answer, but her next words caught him off guard.

“Talk about what?”

Emily held her ground, pushing him back just enough so she could see his face clearly. “When did you get back?”

Tristan’s smile faded. He thought she was about to bring up his visit to Andrew, and his lips pressed into a thin line. “Just now. I heard about what happened with you and Andrew, so I came to the hospital to see him.”

Emily paused. “Why didn’t you message me when you got back?”

Tristan’s hand stayed on her shoulder, his voice a little stiff. “I wanted to check on Andrew first, then come find you... Are you mad at me?”

He waited, a little tense.

Emily shook her head, looking honestly surprised. “Why would I be mad?”

Tristan’s eyes softened. He reached out, giving her cheek a gentle pinch. “I went to see Andrew without telling you. Doesn’t that make you upset?”

Emily just looked puzzled. “No, I’m not upset. What did you say to him?”

“No, I’m really not mad,” Emily said softly, her eyes gentle, a hint of resignation in her voice. “Why would I be?”

Tristan studied her, then carefully took her hand. When she didn’t pull away, his voice grew warm and quiet. “Can we just talk for a minute? I’m nervous. I thought you’d be mad at me for going to see Andrew without telling you.”

Emily shook her head. “I’m not.”

She realized she hadn’t given Tristan enough security lately, especially after what happened with Andrew. That’s why he’d gone to confront Andrew in the first place. She needed to clear things up, so he wouldn’t worry anymore.

She looked at Tristan and asked, “If I went to see Andrew, would you be mad at me?”

Tristan didn’t answer right away. Of course he would be upset, but he couldn’t just say that out loud. He thought for a moment, then said, “He saved you. You should go check on him.”
