Emily had a feeling. The news about Isabella Austin and Dennis Lane’s paternity test must have gotten to these three already, which explained why they showed up in such a rush.

Benjamin Gomez stopped right in front of her. His eyes were cold as they flicked over her face. He lowered his voice. “Emily Blair, I won’t be forgetting you anytime soon.”

Emily didn’t flinch. Before she could reply, Tristan Davis pulled her close, holding her tightly against his chest.

Tristan lifted his chin, almost looking proud of himself. “Mr. Gomez, maybe you should be more worried about Isabella Austin. Her mess seems a little more urgent, don’t you think?”

Benjamin narrowed his eyes. Now that Isabella was inside, he dropped any sense of civility and went on the offensive. “And who do you think you are?”

Tristan just laughed, hugging Emily even closer. “Who am I? Since you’re asking, I’ll answer. I’m a guy with a girlfriend. And here’s the best part, my girlfriend isn’t a criminal or stuck in a police station.”

He smiled, watching Benjamin’s expression darken. “So, tell me, doesn’t that already put me ahead of a few other men around here?”

Benjamin’s face stayed stiff. He sneered, clearly trying to push Tristan’s buttons. “So Ms. Blair didn’t fall for Andrew Lane’s charm after all?”

Just as Benjamin hoped, Tristan’s mood soured the moment Andrew’s name came up.

Emily cut in, her voice cool and sharp. “That’s none of your business. Maybe take care of Isabella’s problem first.”

She glanced at Isabella’s parents standing behind Benjamin. They pretended not to see her, turning away with stiff, cold faces.

Emily took Tristan’s hand. “Let’s go.”

When they got in the car, Tristan couldn’t hide how annoyed he was, but he kept his voice down for Emily’s sake. “What did Andrew Lane do this time?”

“Remember those photos you had someone take overseas? The woman who was always around Benjamin Gomez…” Emily started.

She told him everything that had happened lately, especially the stuff about Isabella and Andrew. She explained how Andrew helped by connecting her with Kevin Lane for the paternity test. She left out the part about Andrew giving her a ring.

She also didn’t mention the truth about her own family background. Since she had no plans to reconnect with her birth parents, she figured there was no point.

The longer Tristan listened, the deeper his frown got. Emily finished, “There really is nothing between Andrew and me, so don’t get the wrong idea.”

When she was done, Tristan reached over and squeezed her hand gently. “Alright. I get it.”

Emily couldn’t help but laugh. “So, not jealous anymore?”
