Ethan let out a sharp, almost mocking laugh. “Didn’t you just say it yourself?”
Amelia glanced at him, confused. “Say what?”
He gave her a look. “You mentioned Emily Blair. She’s the only reason things have gone sideways between Andrew and Isabella. No one else could get under his skin like that.”
He paused, eyes meeting hers. “I checked around. Andrew’s business trip was supposed to last a day or two, tops. There’s important stuff waiting for him back at headquarters, but he’s been hanging around here way longer than he needs to. Why do you think that is? I can’t think of any reason except Emily Blair.”
Amelia put her phone down. Her confusion melted into anger. “You’re right. It’s always Emily Blair. Everything goes wrong because of her.”
She clenched her fists so tightly her knuckles turned white. “Why can’t she just leave Isabella alone? Five years have gone by, and she’s still causing trouble. It’s disgusting.”
Ethan’s expression turned cold. He couldn’t forget what Emily Blair had done to him years ago, making a complete fool of him in public. The shame of it still stung, even after all this time. Five years hadn’t dulled his hatred—if anything, it had only grown sharper. He’d watched her fight her way up from nothing, and the higher she climbed, the more he burned with jealousy. He’d always promised himself that one day, he’d make her pay for what she did, make her regret ever crossing him.
But now, she was so far out of reach that he didn’t even know where to start.
Amelia’s anger faded, replaced by a helpless kind of panic. “So what are we supposed to do? Andrew’s given up on Isabella, Grandpa Kevin won’t get involved, and I don’t have any connections. I haven’t worked in years. Who else is left to help her?”
Her hands twisted in the fabric of her shirt. “Maybe I should just go beg Andrew one more time. Maybe he’ll change his mind if I keep asking.”
Ethan just shook his head. “Are you kidding? You heard how he talked to you. He’s made up his mind. If you keep bothering him, he’ll just send you back to Riven, no questions asked.”
Ethan rolled his eyes. “Think about it. Grandpa adores Dennis. He’d do anything for that boy, even grab the stars out of the sky if Dennis asked. If Dennis goes to Grandpa and begs him to help Isabella, do you really think Grandpa could say no? I bet he’d give in.”
Amelia’s eyes brightened, a flicker of hope sparking to life. “You might be on to something. Dennis is still so little and he misses Isabella so much. If we guide him just a bit, he’ll definitely ask Grandpa for help. Grandpa loves him so much, he might actually agree to save Isabella.”
Ethan nodded. “That’s exactly what I mean. Right now, Dennis is our only shot.”
Amelia’s breaths came fast as her mind raced through the possibilities. The more she thought about it, the more hopeful she felt.
She jumped up from her seat, determination lighting up her face. “We can’t waste time. Let’s go find Dennis, now.”
