Emily stared at him, her eyes distant. “Yeah, I see it. So what?”

Andrew gave her a crooked smile. “Does seeing me like this cheer you up?”

She shrugged, her tone flat. “If I had been the one to do it, maybe I’d be happy. But I wasn’t.”

He paused, thinking it over. “You didn’t do it, but honestly, it’s almost the same thing.”

Emily caught the serious look in his eyes and felt a knot of worry tighten in her chest. “What do you mean?”

He smirked, looking right at her. “You already have someone in mind, don’t you?”

She rolled her eyes. “Andrew, just spit it out.”

Andrew sat up straighter, pulling at his collar. “It was your boyfriend.”

Tristan?

Emily blurted out, “No way.”

Andrew just looked at her, his mouth twitching. “Why not?”

Emily frowned, pressing her lips together. She wanted to deny it, but deep down, she knew it was possible. Tristan had totally lost his cool when he went through her phone. He never liked Andrew. It wouldn’t be that crazy for him to go after Andrew and start a fight.

Andrew kept going. “You don’t have to cover for him. I’ve got proof.”

Emily glanced up, searching his face.

Andrew’s voice went low and steady. “Tristan messaged me last night and told me to meet at the restaurant today. We talked, he got pissed, and he hit me first. The whole thing was caught on the restaurant’s security cameras. They already sent me the footage. If you don’t believe me, I can show you.”

Emily felt her stomach drop. If he was this sure, it had to be true. But Tristan hadn’t mentioned a word. Suddenly, she remembered how he’d refused her video call earlier. Maybe this was why.

Emily nodded, totally calm. “Yeah.”

He tried again. “You’re not blaming Tristan at all?”

She nodded. “That’s right.”

Annoyance flashed across Andrew’s face. “You really trust him, huh?”

Emily turned away, her voice ice cold. “Mr. Lane, just remember, Tristan and I are together. Of course I’m going to take his side. You’re the one on the outside.”

Outsider.

Andrew hated how much that word stung. It hit him right in the chest, leaving a dull ache behind. He curled his fingers, trying to ignore it.

He’d been struggling with that feeling ever since he found out Emily was with Tristan.
