Emily didn’t even blink. “Go ahead. Getting into a fight isn’t the end of the world. He fought back, you fought back, I’ll get him a lawyer. Worst case, he spends a few days in a cell. Not a big deal.”

The frustration inside Andrew only grew heavier.

He hid it well. “You trust him a lot.”

Emily lifted her chin, ready to argue, but Andrew spoke again. “But does he trust you?”

She paused, turning to face him. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Tristan thinks there’s still something going on between us.”

Her heart gave a sharp, uneasy jolt.

Andrew spoke like he was stating some random fact, his voice flat and steady. There was no drama, no exaggeration, just the truth.

“That’s not true,” Emily said, trying to sound sure. “He knows that’s over…”

“Does he really?” Andrew cut her off.

Emily’s jaw tightened. “What are you trying to say, Andrew?”

“Why do you think he punched me? It’s not just about me. It’s about you too.”

A frown slowly creased Emily’s brow.

Emily felt her heart sink, though she kept her voice steady. “That’s just your opinion. Tristan and I are fine. You don’t need to worry.”

Andrew smiled a little, like he saw straight through her. “You don’t have to believe me. I said what I needed to say. If you don’t see it now, you will eventually. Time always tells.”

Emily met his gaze, steady and clear. “You really think you matter that much? That a few words from you could mess things up between Tristan and me? That’s not going to happen.”

A shadow flickered in Andrew’s eyes.

After everything, both of them were left feeling worse.

Emily looked away, her tone frosty. “Is there anything else, Mr. Lane? If not, please leave. You’re in the way.”
