Amelia Lane stamped her foot, feeling completely defeated. She turned to leave, but Kevin Lane spoke up. “Sort out what you need to by tomorrow. The day after, we’re heading to the capital. Take Dennis with you.”

Amelia’s eyes widened for a second, then she broke into a bright smile. “Okay, Grandpa. I’ll get everything done.”

That night, while Amelia was packing suitcases for herself and Dennis, Andrew Lane came home.

Work had kept Andrew so busy that he rarely came back, usually spending his nights at the office. He glanced at the suitcases stacked by the wall and instantly understood what was happening.

Dennis was sitting next to Kevin Lane, legs swinging as he stuffed cherries into his mouth. When he spotted Andrew, Dennis jumped off the couch and dashed over to hug Andrew’s leg. “Daddy, are you coming with us to the capital to find Mommy?” His voice was soft and hopeful.

Andrew ruffled his hair. “Daddy still has to work.”

It was a gentle way to say no.

Dennis’s face fell. He pouted, looking more and more upset. “Mommy got taken by the bad guys. Daddy, you haven’t seen her in so many days. Don’t you miss her?”

Amelia walked over, suitcase rolling behind her. The calm, distant look on Andrew’s face made her heart skip.

She quickly called Dennis over. “Dennis, come here. Daddy’s busy right now. You need to be good and let him work, okay?”

After everything that had happened—after Andrew learned the truth about the fire and realized he’d been lied to—Amelia half expected him to stand in their way, not to mention help them.

Dennis lowered his head, twisting his little hands together. He looked so unhappy that anyone could read his feelings from the way he stood.

Amelia gently took his hand. “Come on, Dennis. Daddy has a lot going on, so let’s not bother him, alright?”

Dennis puffed out his cheeks and muttered, “Daddy doesn’t love Mommy at all. He’s a bad man.” He blurted it out and, realizing how bold that sounded, spun around and hurried upstairs.

Amelia froze for a second. Her scalp tingled as she glanced at Andrew.

When Amelia and Dennis arrived in the capital, Isabella’s parents were there to meet them. They waited in the airport’s VIP lounge, scanning the crowd. The moment they spotted Kevin and Dennis, their faces lit up as they hurried over.

“Mr. Lane, Dennis.”

Isabella’s mom smiled warmly. “Mr. Lane, thank you for coming all this way.”

Isabella’s dad added, “It must have been a tiring trip. We’ve reserved a great restaurant. Why don’t we head there and get something to eat?”

Kevin hadn’t answered yet when Dennis shot his arms out and ran straight into Isabella’s mom’s hug. “Grandma, I missed you so much!”

Isabella’s mom was all smiles. She bent down, trying to lift Dennis off the ground, but he was too heavy now. She laughed. “Dennis, you’ve grown up. Grandma can’t even pick you up anymore.”
