Isabella’s dad jumped in with a smile. “If Grandma can’t pick you up, then Grandpa will do it.”

Dennis grinned, his eyes lighting up as his grandpa scooped him off the ground and bounced him a few times. “Dennis is definitely getting bigger. If you grow any more, Grandpa won’t be able to pick you up, either.”

Dennis patted his belly, looking very pleased with himself. “Grandpa, I eat until I’m full every single day.”

Isabella’s mom laughed softly. “That’s good, sweetheart. Eating well will help you grow up tall and strong.”

Amelia waved everyone over. “Come on, you two, don’t just stand around. Let’s get moving.”

Isabella’s mom snapped back to attention. “Oh, right, let’s go.”

When they got to the restaurant, Isabella’s parents couldn’t help but try to dig into Kevin Lane’s plans, even though Dennis was right there at the table. They tried a couple of times to steer the conversation that way, but Kevin always managed to dodge their questions without missing a beat.

By the time dinner was winding down, they still hadn’t gotten anything out of him. Their anxiety was starting to show.

When it was time to say goodbye, Kevin didn’t need them to arrange a hotel or a driver. He had a place to stay in the city, and his driver was already waiting.

With no idea what Kevin was really thinking, Isabella’s parents could only keep smiling politely as they walked him out.

After Dennis hopped into the car, Kevin finally spoke up. “I didn’t answer your questions earlier because Dennis was around. Hope you don’t mind.”

Isabella’s parents paused, then quickly shook their heads. “Of course not. We understand. You’re just looking out for Dennis.”

Kevin nodded, his gaze sharp even though his eyes looked a little tired. “I’ve started reaching out to people who can help. I’ll do everything I can, but I can’t promise it’ll work out. Don’t get your hopes too high.”

Hearing that, Isabella’s parents finally let out the breath they’d been holding. “We understand, Mr. Lane. We’re already so grateful you’re willing to help. Whatever happens, we’ll accept it.”

They nodded eagerly, promising to do as he said, and waved as his car pulled away.

Not long after Kevin, Amelia, and Dennis left, the smiles faded from Isabella’s parents’ faces. In the bright daylight, Isabella’s mom’s expression turned cold.

“What have they found now?” she asked quietly.

By “they,” she meant Emily Blair, Rose Ward, and the lawyer they’d hired.

These days, it wasn’t just Isabella’s parents running around. Emily and her friends had been working nonstop, digging up evidence and submitting new findings over and over again.
