Tristan Davis walked in just as Emily Blair sat there frowning, completely lost in her own thoughts. He let out a soft laugh, came over, and reached out to gently smooth the little crease between her brows.
“What’s got you looking so serious?” he asked, his voice warm and teasing.
Emily barely even noticed him until his hand was already there. She stiffened for a second, but as soon as she caught his familiar scent, she relaxed almost instantly.
Tristan let his hand drift down to the back of her neck, gently rubbing in slow circles. The warmth of his touch seemed to melt away most of her tension.
“Come on, tell me what’s going on,” he coaxed.
Emily hesitated, then finally handed over her phone, showing him her chat with Elizabeth Wilson.
Tristan glanced over the texts, then set the phone aside. “Don’t let people like that ruin your mood. They’re not worth your time, okay?”
But Emily still looked a little troubled.
Tristan grabbed the arms of her chair and tugged her closer to him.
“I actually came over with some good news today. Want to hear it?” he said, leaning back casually against her desk, both hands braced on either side of her, basically caging her in.
He was so close, Emily had to lean her head back against the chair just to look at him. “Alright, what is it?”
Tristan’s mouth curled into a crooked grin, his eyes sparkling with mischief. “Kiss me and I’ll tell you.”
Emily couldn’t help it—her eyes flickered from his eyes to his lips. Up close, his lips were fuller than she remembered, soft and a perfect shade of pink, not too bright or too pale. She still remembered what it felt like to kiss him, how his lips were kind of like biting into jelly, soft but never breaking...
She got caught staring, and Tristan’s gaze turned a little darker, a little more intense.
He leaned in, his voice dropping to an intimate whisper. “You gonna keep staring, or are you gonna kiss me?”
“You’re absolutely right,” Tristan said, grinning. “If I want to kiss my girlfriend, I should just do it.”
Emily swatted at him, but Tristan caught her hand and held it, refusing to let go.
“Alright, calm down,” he said, squeezing her hand. “Don’t be mad. Let me tell you the good news.”
Emily dug her fingers into his palm in mock annoyance. “Then spit it out already.”
Tristan winced, making a show of how much it hurt, but Emily could tell he was just playing around.
When she looked like she might actually punch him, he finally straightened up, his expression turning serious.
“So, I found something overseas, about Benjamin Gomez. There’s this retired mercenary named Paul. After he left the army, he started doing shady jobs for money—stuff like roughing people up for whoever paid him. I had someone follow the leads, and it all pointed to him. Last month, before everything happened to you, Benjamin Gomez got in touch with him. He took a bunch of money from his overseas account, and right after that, Paul suddenly owned a new property. The price matches almost exactly what Benjamin withdrew. And someone saw them meeting up too.”
