The man was tall, dressed from head to toe in black. The headlights from the car lit up his body, but his face was swallowed by darkness. Emily couldn’t make out any of his features, but she had no doubt—he was staring right at her.

He just stood there, silent and perfectly still. The whole thing felt off, like something out of a crime show. Emily’s mind flashed with scenes from those late-night TV thrillers, and she quietly clicked the lock on her door.

The driver got out and walked over to the man, saying something Emily couldn’t quite hear. She could tell the driver was annoyed, the frustration clear in his voice and the way he waved his hands.

Finally, the man moved. He turned to the driver and said something in a low voice. Whatever it was, it made the driver’s face twist in anger. He shoved the man, but the man barely reacted, just shifting his weight. The driver quickly stepped back, suddenly on edge.

Emily watched as her driver shouted a few more times. The man didn’t even flinch. Instead, he slowly turned his head back toward Emily and stared at her through the windshield.

The driver crossed his arms, grumbled something under his breath, and climbed back into the car.

Emily glanced at him. “What was that about?”

The driver buckled his seatbelt and let out a heavy sigh. “Ms. Blair, he says he wants you to get out and talk to him.”

Emily frowned. “Do you know who he is?”

He shook his head. “No idea. But Ms. Blair, please don’t get out. There’s something not right about this guy. He gives me a bad feeling. I’m worried he might try something.”

Emily leaned back against the seat, her brow furrowing deeper. “Yeah, I know.”

The driver started the engine, gripped the steering wheel a little tighter, and leaned on the horn. The sound echoed through the empty street, long and sharp.

He honked several more times, but the man in front of the car didn’t so much as flinch. He just stood there, blocking their way.

Still, the man didn’t move. The driver’s patience wore thin. He pounded the horn again and again, each beep shorter and sharper than before.

Nothing.

Finally, the driver rolled down his window and yelled, “What’s your problem? Can’t you see we’re trying to leave? Move out of the way! If you don’t, I’m calling the police!”

The man didn’t react. He just stood there, as if he hadn’t heard a word.

The driver muttered, “Psycho,” and reached for the gear shift, ready to turn the car around and leave.

But before he could, the man walked right up, planting himself directly in front of the car again.
