The road was so narrow that the car could barely turn, crawling along at a snail’s pace. The man outside easily kept up, blocking their way without breaking a sweat.

The driver was at his wit’s end. He rolled down the window and fired off a few more curses, but the man didn’t budge.

From the back seat, Emily caught a flash of the man’s face as the headlights swept over him. Her heart nearly stopped.

It was Benjamin Gomez.

Seeing him didn’t make her feel any safer. If anything, her nerves went on high alert. Just a few days ago, Tristan Davis had warned her about Benjamin. He was supposed to be dealing with a mess overseas, buried up to his neck in trouble. So what was he doing here, suddenly back in the country, waiting for her?

There was no way this was just a coincidence. Emily’s stomach twisted with dread. She remembered all too well the things Benjamin had done in the past.

The man stood his ground in front of the car, refusing to move. The driver was fuming, cursing under his breath.

Emily leaned forward. “I’ll go out and talk to him.”

The driver shook his head, panicked. “No way, Ms. Blair. That guy’s bad news. It’s not safe for you.”

But Emily needed answers. “It’s okay. I know him. He’s here to see me, not to start a fight. Take my phone. If anything seems off, call the police and text my top contact, let them know what’s going on. Got it?”

The driver kept trying to talk her out of it and hesitated to take the phone, but Emily wouldn’t back down. Finally, he gave in and took it from her.

“Then let me come with you, Ms. Blair. If something happens, I’ll be right there.”

Benjamin looked at the driver, then dropped his foot back to the ground. His eyes went back to Emily.

“If you have something to say, Mr. Gomez, say it. I’m in a hurry.”

Benjamin finally spoke, his voice rough and dry, like he hadn’t had water in days.

“It’s not me who has a problem. It’s you.”

Emily’s brow creased. “What are you talking about?”
