I sat in the guest room for a long time, listening to the laughter and chatter downstairs gradually fading into sleep.
When I woke up again, the villa was quiet.
My stomach hurt badly, so I went downstairs to find something to eat. The maid, clearly irritated, told me there was nothing left to eat and if I wanted something, I should make it myself. The ingredients were in the basement.
But at the basement door, I saw Luna sitting with her legs spread wide, on top of Sterling's head, her voice soft and seductive.
"Sterling, what if Nina finds out? She'll be heartbroken."
"Mmm... it feels so good, Sterling…"
Sterling smirked wickedly.
"Luna, you like it so much, why do you always refuse me? Don't worry, she won't find out. I promise I won't tie you down with marriage, but you have to satisfy me…"
Luna held Sterling's head with both hands, pushing her hips forward.
"Sterling, just this once. After this, I'll go abroad and never disturb you and Nina's happiness again. Let's just stay like the purest childhood friends."
Sterling said nothing.
The disgusting sounds pierced my ears, making me feel sick and unsteady as I stumbled away from the scene.
Only after I had gotten far away from that suffocating place could I barely regain my composure. Tears streamed down my face, falling heavily to the ground.
I sat numbly on the curb, lost and confused, when Luna's soft, uneasy voice reached me.
"Nina, I'm sorry for what happened today."
"For which part?"
I looked at her eyes, which were filled with guilt.
"Well... it's just that I misunderstood you and thought you were going to harm Oliver. It's my first time being a mother, and I overreacted about the child's safety. It wasn't meant to target you."
"And I promised Sterling that I'd let you raise the child. In the future, there will be no impact on your relationship. Oliver will be like your own biological child."
As she spoke, her eyes reddened, and her voice broke as she added,
"Don't worry, Nina. After Oliver's full moon celebration, I'll go abroad, and I'll never come back. I'll leave everything, including my parents, Oliver, and Sterling, to you."
Her expression—full of emotion but forced to retreat—reminded me of the time she left for overseas.
A sharp pain surged in my chest. How could she be so innocent, so calm, and steal my parents' and Sterling's love while pretending to be so sincere?
I grabbed Luna by the collar, ready to confront her, but before I could speak, someone kicked me hard.
The stones on the ground dug into my wounds, old injuries joining new ones. The pain was so intense that I almost blacked out, and Luna gasped in alarm.
She tried to help me, but Sterling pulled her into his arms.
"Whatever happens, take it up with me!"
Luna explained softly, "Sterling, that's not the case. Nina, she didn't…"
Sterling's secretary delivered a necklace as a gift.
Meanwhile, I crouched by the trash can, slowly burning all our wedding photos and certificates. The ashes scattered with the wind.
The third morning, Sterling called me.
"Nina, I've forgiven you for the past. Today is the child's baptism. Wear something nice. I'll have the secretary pick you up at noon."
I smiled and agreed, pretending to have no ill will.
After hanging up, I put on the old clothes I had worn when they found me, and headed straight for the hotel.
By the time the auspicious hour for the full moon banquet passed, I still hadn't shown up.
Sterling's face darkened. He couldn't understand why I was still angry with him at such a time. He tried to suppress the uneasy feeling in his heart.
He ordered someone to go and find me.
When my parents found out, their expressions soured. "This is ridiculous! If it were up to me, we should've had Luna marry into the Blackwood family. That would've been more reliable."
Sterling's mother frowned slightly but said nothing.
Just then, someone rushed in from outside, panic in their voice.
"Mr. Blackwood! Mrs. Blackwood jumped off the building!"
