In this standout chapter of the Internet novel Nerd's Badboy Alpha, iReader introduces new challenges, powerful emotions, and major plot progress that captivate readers from beginning to end.

I never get "summons." Which is why I nearly pissed myself while I was doing homework in my room this afternoon and Stephanie poked her head in with "Hey, nimrod, the Luna wants you."

My jaw dropped open. "Wait, for what?"

My cousin glared at me. "How the fuck should I know? Get your ass moving. You don't want to piss her off."

I was still in my school uniform, so I quickly changed into some jeans, a blouse with a collar, my trainers, and a cardigan. I took my braid down, brushed my hair, and decided to leave it down. It looked kind of pretty.

I dashed down the dark corridor as well as I could since I might as well be wearing a diaper-my bleeding started as soon as I got home from school and I had discovered that the pads Aunt Juvy had given me are designed for super heavy flow.

As I was about to sprint out of the door, my Aunt Ruffia catches the back of my sweater. "Where are you going?"

"I got summoned by the Luna," I said, breathing hard because I actually exerted myself in the last five minutes.

My aunt raised her eyebrow. "Do you want me to go with you?"

"Would you? That would be great."

Her lips tightened, but she nodded. "I'll just tell Ramona to take over the preparation of supper. I'm glad you at least combed your hair."

I restrained myself from rolling my eyes. Hey, she's being nice. Kind of. Well, she's not being an outright bitch. I waited for her at the door. She grabbed her wrap and together she and I headed for the Luna's house down the block.

"What do you think this is about?" I asked her.

She shrugged. "Who knows. Maybe the old woman told her something she didn't tell us. Why did you tell Mrs. Marsos you didn't want to know?"

Two nights ago, Mrs. Marsos had looked at me with her clear silver eyes and told me I would either be the destruction or the salvation of my bloodline. She could see two paths for me, she said, and she could tell me which ones they were, so I could make the right decisions when the time came.

I did not react well. I stuck my fingers in my ear and said, "I don't want to hear it, I don't want to hear it."

Cowardly of me, but she was the same woman who foretold the death of my parents. I wasn't keen for her to tell me I was going to suffer the same fate. If I'm destined to be squashed by a meteor as I'm walking to school one day, I'd like to be blissfully unaware of it.

The old woman had placed her hand on my knee and patted it. "It's all right, my daughter. I won't tell you anything you don't want to know. It's all right."

And that was that.

My aunt said, "I'd like to know. I want to know what I should be prepared for."

Mrs. Marsos refused. "No, I cannot allow any decisions you make influence the outcome of this child's destiny."

And that certainly burned my aunt's bacon, so she was pretty peeved after that.

"Madame?" I broach timidly. "May I ask what's happening?"

"Oh, you poor child." Our Luna takes my arm and pulls me to her side, putting her arms around me. "You must be so confused."

Well, yeah. But with her holding me like this, it feels really nice. Like I'm in a cocoon of safety and nothing bad is ever going to happen to me. "What is happening?"

My Luna looks up at my Uncle. "Alfred, you didn't tell her?"

"I hadn't had the chance. She was ill yesterday and then the Royce boy was here..."

Our Luna's blue eyes glittered. "Ah, yes, the Royce boy." She turns me toward her and places her hands on my shoulders. "Tell me, dear, what is your relationship with Alex Royce?"

"We're friends," I stammer. "I think he sees me as a pet of some kind. Maybe I remind him of this lost puppy he saved in a park once when he was a kid."

"Ah, good." Our Luna nods. "And your feelings for him, what are they?"

I can't exactly lie to my Luna. She can compel me to tell the truth. Until recently, I didn't really pay attention to males and romance and crap like that. I still kind of don't. "Uh... I find him very attractive. He makes me nervous because of it. But I don't think he returns the attraction. I really do believe he merely sees me as a pet."

Our Luna's eyes glittered again. "I'll allow it, for now, because he seems to be your number one protector for the moment."
