Lauren stood up, meeting Claudia's gaze calmly.

She spoke, her words dripping with sarcasm, "I've seen plenty of hypocrites. You confidently claim I'm helping my daughter 'pick up trash,' so how do you explain Mr. Ferguson getting injured while saving you?"

"That was him being a meddling fool," Claudia retorted.

She continued, "York Ferguson and I are divorced. I have nothing to do with him now. Whether you get engaged or married is your business. Go to York; don't come here seeking validation."

Lauren nodded, seemingly satisfied. "Dr. Watkins, remember what you said today."

Just as Lauren left Claudia's office, Gideon Harvest knocked and came in.

"Need any help?" Gideon asked.

Claudia shook her head, exhausted.

"Claudia," Gideon said, "Marcia is nothing like Ann James. The Windsor family is known for being powerful and aggressive. While Marcia has a decent reputation, her mother is a real handful."

He explained, "The Windsors are all about profit. They were trying to arrange a marriage with the Ferguson family even before you married him. Now that you're divorced, and judging by Mrs. Windsor's attitude, they're fully prepared to forge a powerful alliance with the Fergusons. If Mr. Ferguson remains hung up on you, the Windsors will definitely come after you."

"If you run into any trouble, let me know right away," Gideon added.

Claudia gave Gideon a weary look. "Gideon, a clear conscience fears no accusation."

She'd cross that bridge when she came to it. She didn't look for trouble, but she wasn't afraid of it either.

Gideon reminded her, "The Quinn family is hosting a dinner party this weekend. If you can spare the time, I'd like you to come with me as my date. There's someone I want you to meet."
