Claudia sat across from Old Mr. Ferguson. They sized each other up, their gazes far from friendly.
Old Mr. Ferguson spoke first. "If you had been more gracious and known your place, you and York wouldn't be in this situation."
Claudia cursed him internally.
Darleen Ferguson had been right. The old patriarch of the Ferguson family was selfish, fiercely protective of his own, and utterly unreasonable.
The way he saw it, his grandson was blameless for how things had turned out; it was all her fault for not being gracious enough, for not knowing her place.
Irritated, Claudia's tone turned sharp. "To what do I owe the pleasure of you stooping to visit someone so ungracious and senseless, Mr. Ferguson?"
Old Mr. Ferguson scoffed contemptuously. "York is dating Miss Windsor. If you promise to stop pestering him and stay out of their relationship, I might be willing to let the Watkins family off the hook."
Claudia couldn't help but ask, "Where do you get the confidence, sir, to think that I'm the one chasing after your scumbag grandson?"
Old Mr. Ferguson's tone was dismissive. "You're just the daughter of a bankrupt family. Don't think you can look down on everyone just because you became a doctor and met a few wealthy people."
He continued, "Even if you worked hard for three lifetimes, you'd never be worthy of York."
Claudia stood up, having no desire to continue the conversation with the old man.
She looked at him sternly. "Rest assured, Mr. Ferguson. Even if every other man on this planet dropped dead, I would never, ever get back together with your grandson!"
Before leaving, Claudia couldn't resist adding a final jab. "And please, keep your grandson on a tighter leash. Stop letting him debase himself by constantly running over here to disrupt my life."
Without giving Old Mr. Ferguson a chance to explode, Claudia walked straight out.
She heard the sound of a teacup slamming onto a table behind her but didn't look back.
Claudia returned to her clinic at the hospital.
Marcia Windsor's mother, Lauren Yvette, knocked and entered Claudia's office.
Claudia looked at the extravagantly dressed young woman before her, then glanced at the patient's name on her computer screen. The visual age difference was quite stark.
The words were harsh and ugly, and Claudia couldn't help but frown.
Lauren's warning continued, "Even if you're resentful, my daughter Marcia is about to get engaged to Mr. Ferguson. If you dare to sabotage their engagement, I won't let you off easy."
A sarcastic smile touched Claudia's lips.
So, this was Marcia's mother, Mrs. Windsor.
It seemed she had stumbled into a nest of vipers; they were all coming out of the woodwork to warn her.
Claudia rose from her chair.
She stood before Lauren, her hands tucked into the pockets of her white coat.
"Mrs. Windsor," Claudia said, "I can't stop you from helping your daughter pick up my trash, but this is my office. If you say one more disrespectful word, I won't be so polite."
