Laura had always come across as a sharp, calculating woman. How could she make such a ridiculous mistake? The only reason the Merlocks hadn't gone bankrupt was because of Bradley's support.

"It's true. She was caught red-handed at a hotel. The man she was with was a rich kid who used to be one of her obsessed admirers."

Mia went on, "She probably figured she couldn't count on Mr. Hitchcock anymore, so she tried to move on to a new target but got caught in bed. The guy's mom showed up to drag him away and apparently beat Laura until her face was swollen."

To smooth things over, the boy's mother had to plead with Bradley and flatter him before it was settled. Now, every rich kid had been warned by their parents to stay far away from Laura.

Noelle was silent for a moment. "Laura actually went to see Mrs. Greene in the hospital before this, but she got turned away."

Grace snorted. "If it were me, I wouldn't agree to anything Laura offered either. What is wrong with that family?"

Emma's situation was a warning enough. The Merlocks were like leeches. Anyone who got close to them would be drained dry.

Mia sighed. "There's a video of the whole scandal online. The once-glamorous Laura is now being called a shameless whore."

She added, "My aunt-in-law was the one who took the money and dealt with her. Laura's reputation is ruined. There's no coming back from this."

Since no one ever really liked the Merlocks, everyone was eager to kick them while they were down now that they were at their wits' end.

Grace spoke up. "Serves her right."

Mia hummed. "Mrs. Greene actually offered to send Laura abroad, Noelle. She had a choice, and she refused."

Noelle told them what had happened at the hospital.

Grace scoffed. "Laura's too greedy. She wanted to save the Merlock family from ruin and keep Mrs. Merlock out of jail. Did she think Mrs. Greene was a wishing lamp?"

Mia agreed, "Exactly. The Merlocks are just too greedy. And Laura lost everything because of her useless mother. It just wasn't worth it."

Noelle hadn't expected Laura to keep doubling down and walking the same doomed path. Now that she was being humiliated by the entire internet, there wasn't any room for sympathy. She had brought this on herself.
