Cedric's voice carried a hint of exhaustion. He looked at Noelle and said, "What do you want to eat?"

"Anything's fine. How about L Bistro? It's much closer," Noelle replied. She could tell that he was tired, given the dark circles under his eyes.

Cedric said nothing more, and both of them got into a car and headed to L Bistro. He was not driving this time and had a driver come with them.

When they arrived at the private room, they found that there were already other people there. It was Jeremy and Alfred.

Jeremy looked at Noelle and said, "Let me pick the place the next time we make plans for dinner. What's so great about L Bistro anyway?"

Noelle replied, "It's nearby, and we're mainly gathering here in order to talk. We can always choose somewhere else for dinner next time."

Jeremy did not press the issue further. He just seemed to want to make his presence known.

Alfred then spoke up. "I've been investigating Carl recently. He hasn't really left the island over the past few years. As for what's happening on the island, we haven't been able to dig up any information yet."

Noelle fell silent for a while before replying. "It's definitely hard to look into what's going on there."

"What makes you say that?" Jeremy spoke up with a hint of arrogance as he glanced at everyone. "I may just be a lawyer, but I still have some connections."

Noelle was surprised. "Then hurry up and tell us already. Don't keep us guessing."

"I came across this piece of information by pure luck alone. A friend of mine took on a labor arbitration case regarding an employee on the island."

She was now even more surprised. "Was the employee unhappy with their treatment at work?"

Jeremy explained, "Exactly. They said that they were laid off without any reason and weren't given the compensation they deserved. But when my friend tried to talk to the company's HR on the island, they immediately paid out the settlement without a fuss. The case didn't really last that long."

His tone suddenly shifted as he continued, "But I got the employee's contact info and reached out to him to ask about the situation on the island. It turns out that the employee was just a junior research assistant, mostly tasked to do odd jobs, so they didn't know much about the classified research.

"As for Carl, they said that they didn't know him well, but after Carl became the team leader there, he changed a lot of the unfair policies and oppressive practices at work. He's become rather popular on the island since."

Noelle felt even more confused after hearing Jeremy's explanation. None of it had happened in her past life. Carl had not become the head of the island's research team in her past life.
