Cedric lowered his gaze. "Impossible."

He would never agree to the Merlocks' terms.

Alfred nodded. "Exactly. We'll just spend more money. It should be enough to find a suitable kidney within half a month."

It should be doable with their resources. Cedric laughed bitterly. "Let's hope so."

Alfred looked at him. "Eat something. Nelly's still angry and won't talk to you anytime soon. But she'll understand once this case is resolved and the Merlocks pay the price."

Cedric stared at him. "The Greenes were the ones who handled the cover-up back then. We'll bear some of the responsibility, too."

Alfred frowned. "The Merlocks really left a mess behind."

If they were being thorough, even Emma would be considered an accomplice.

Alfred said, "It's not entirely hopeless. As long as the Liddells are willing to settle things, Mrs. Greene won't be in trouble. Noelle knows the Merlocks are the main culprits."

Cedric murmured, "But do I deserve her forgiveness?"

"Didn't you save her life back then? Did you forget?" Alfred knew about it. "Don't tell me you never told her?"

Cedric stayed silent.

Alfred was frustrated. "You should've told her. She lost her memory and has no idea it was you who saved her."

"I didn't want to manipulate her." Cedric didn't want Noelle to accept him because of gratitude or guilt. He didn't want that kind of relationship.

"How is that manipulation?" Alfred felt helpless, but Cedric was stubborn.

Alfred stared at him. "Fine, do whatever you want."

He wanted to see how long Cedric could keep this up.

Outside, the autumn wind had turned colder. Leaves were yellowing and drifting to the ground, completely different from the lively summer.

When Noelle got up, she noticed she had a runny nose. Though her fever had subsided, she still felt miserable.

"I will." As Noelle exited the room, she saw Cedric standing outside with Liam.

Her heart sank when she spotted Liam. Of course. She would need a new lawyer now that the Greene family was part of this.

How could Liam protect the Greenes while also prosecuting them on the Liddells' behalf? It was clearly a conflict of interest.

Noelle stared at Liam. "Can I even trust your professionalism?"

Liam looked troubled. He didn't respond and glanced at Cedric. No one could have foreseen this.

The Greenes were now officially part of the case. A lawyer couldn't represent both sides.

Cedric stared at Noelle. "Liam will continue to represent the Liddells."

Noelle gave him a weird smile. "And why should I believe you?"
