The car was silent as every minute and second seemed to stretch on forever. Noelle slowly pulled her hand away. "I'm sorry, but I can't agree to this."

"Why not? Whatever you want to do, I can help make it happen, even if it involves the Merlocks!" Emma seemed surprised.

Noelle looked at her and asked, "Mrs. Merlock has been your good friend for years; can you bear to hurt her?"

A flicker of struggle crossed Emma's eyes. "I'll do it as long as you agree."

"I don't need you to do anything. We have the evidence and witnesses, so Mrs. Merlock will receive her punishment."

Noelle looked at Emma and continued, "As for you, just focus on recovering. It won't be for too long, even if you're sentenced."

Just as Emma had said earlier, she'd been kept in the dark all along. She wouldn't be punished too severely if Liam represented her.

"I'm so sorry, Noelle. I had my selfish reasons, too, but now, I can openly apologize to you," Emma murmured as tears welled in her eyes.

Noelle gave her a glance and replied, "You all should be sorry."

Then, she got out of the car. The cold wind hit her and instantly cleared her mind. Looking at the bare tree branches, Noelle couldn't help but find them bleak and lifeless.

She still preferred summer. The weather might be hot, but she'd always felt warm.

In her past life, the hardest time was winter when she was locked in the mental hospital. They'd purposely shut off the heating in her room, and she'd developed frostbite all over. She'd felt truly hopeless then.
