I was on my knees in my room.

Literally. The last carpet dug into my bare skin but I didn’t move. My hands were bleached together in my laps like I was praying for an answer I already knew wouldn’t come. Liam was sitting on my bed with his elbows on his knees, his shoulders tight and his eyes on me heavy. The air was so still that if a pin dropped, it would echo. Asher had left a while ago, after I had begged him to with my eyes alone.

Now, it was just me and Liam. And this silence.

The unforgiving, thunderous silence because I didn’t know what to say.

I stared at the hem of my hoodie, pretending like it was fascinating. Anything to keep me from looking up at my brother, anything to delay me from saying the words that couldn’t form in my head.

His voice was soft when he finally spoke up, so soft that it made my heart sink even lower. He wasn’t yelling nor was he throwing things. He just asked.

“What were you thinking?” He demanded. “Of all the guys… why Kye? He is dangerous.”

I flinched. There it was… the question that had been clawing at the inside of my head since the door slammed shut behind him earlier today.

I couldn’t answer. Because how do I tell my brother that I slept with someone he hated? Someone who threatened, manipulated, left bruises and burns that weren’t just skin deep?

How do I tell him the truth when it wasn't that simple?

My throat closed up and I could still feel the ghost of Kye’s hand around it. Not from pressure but from control.

The unspoken grip that he always had on me, I thought about what Kye could do to me if I told the truth.

Before we got home, Kye had hissed at me, his voice low and cold like ice that was slowly melting.

‘Say the wrong things and I’ll ruin Liam’s chances with the team. You know I can and you know I will.’

And I do know because I have seen what he’s capable of.

I finally raised my head to look at my brother as I recalled Kye’s words. He had worked so hard and he had been through a lot since he was a kid. And this was his chance to finally get something for himself, I could not ruin this for him.

Liam was still waiting. Still calm as he watched me.
