She went silent and I looked at her from the friend of my eyes, expecting anger. Instead, I for the softest, “you’re an idiot,” I’ve ever heard from her.
“But…” she continued, “this is genius. Why didn’t I think of that?”
“Because you were scared,” I said, softer. “You’ve been scared for weeks.”
She bit her bottom lip and nodded slowly, and something in my chest twisted because my sister… the same one who used to cry when I killed spiders wasn’t the same anymore. There was something broken behind her eyes and I did that. I pushed her further when she needed me to pull her in. Fucking stupid of me. And it all started from the party.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered. “For getting you into this, for how I told dad and for not asking sooner. I should’ve known something was wrong.”
She looked down at her lap. “It’s okay.”
It’s not okay. But she said it anyway. That was Ava, always forgiving people who didn’t deserve it.
We pulled into the driveway, and just as we got out of the car, her phone buzzed. She looked it like it was a bomb and I didn’t even have to ask who it was.
Kye.
She looked at me before sliding her thumb across the screen, answering the call. “Hello?”
She didn’t put it on speaker, but I could hear him through the earpiece. His voice snaked out, cold and entitled. “Where are you?”
“I’m home,” she answered.
“Good. Get dressed. I’m taking you out.”
She swallowed nervously. “I-I have homework.”
“I don’t give a flying fuck.” The voice was sharp now. Cold. The audacity of this bastard. “Get dressed and be ready in 10.”
With that, he hung up.
