Something was off. Kye was being weird and for some reason I couldn’t tell what he was planning.

The second I stepped outside, I felt it in the air, like the quiet before a storm. He was leaning against his car with his hands in his pockets as usual and the smile on his lips were too soft to be his. It was not the usual smug, possessed grin. No, this one was different.

It was tender, almost boyish like he was seeing something precious.

Me. It made my stanch twist.

“Hey sweetheart,” he greeted, extending his hands toward me and before I could recoil, he was already pulling me into a hug. One that lingered longer than it should.

I didn’t move. My arms stayed glued to my sides while my heart pounded against my ribs like it was trying to run away from him. From this moment and form whatever the hell he was playing at.

He pulled back and cupped my face like I was some kind of prize, like I was his, and I definitely was not.

“How are you?” He cooed, his voice syrupy sweet. Too sweet. Dangerous.

I blinked, cocking an eyebrow at him. “Why are you being weird?”

His smile turned even wider. “I missed you,” I replied. “Can’t a guy miss his girl?”

“I’m not your girl.”

“Yet.”

The word slapped me harder than anything he had ever done. I almost forgot how to breath and my throat locked up, but he was already moving and he opened the car door with a mock bow, like this was some fucking fairy tale and not the nightmare it had always been.

“Get in,” he muttered, using his head to gesture towards the car.

I got in because I knew better than to ask where we were going. I had learned not to.
