KYE
Something was off. While I was trying my best to be sweet, Ava was also being sweet… too sweet. It was the kind of soft, tentative affection that had never existed between us, it didn’t have tension cracking through the air. But tonight? She kept looking at me like I hadn’t ruined her life, like I hadn’t blackmailed her into being mine.
The smile she gave me, the way her fingers brushed mine with a hesitant kind of care… it wasn’t her. At least, not the her that I knew.
So yeah, I knew that something was wrong. She’s definitely up to something. But I played along.
“I’ll go get us some water,” I muttered as I rubbed my thumb across the back of her hand like I meant it. “Wait for me and get as much rest as you can, okay?”
She nodded, her eyes covering. Is that guilt?
I slowly left the room, making sure she saw how casual I was. Then I got the two glasses, set them on the kitchen counter, poured water in them and returned back to the room. I handed hers over with a warm smile. “I’ll be right back,” I whispered against her head before placing a soft kiss on it.
I turned around and slipped into the bathroom but I left the door cracked open… just enough for me to see her from where I was.
I watched for a few seconds, quiet and listening and when I was about to give up, the bed creaked and fabric rustled. She thought I was really busy in the bathroom. Amateur move.
Her footsteps padded across the hardwood floor and then there was nothing but silence. She walked back into the room then paused. I could almost hear her heartbeat that was as loud as mine.
Then the other glass clinked and I held my breath, leaning closer to the crack in the door. And my eyes widened as I watched her carefully drop something into my water. Her hands trembled and she looked at it like it might explode.
Well, fuck me. She actually did it. She’s trying to drug me.
I should have been furious, should have stormed out even and grabbed her by the throat as I demanded to know what the hell she was thinking… what the hell she was doing.
Instead, I smiled. So she’s really up to something. It was just as I had suspected but it wasn’t really what I thought she would do but I knew that I was right about her suspicious behavior.
I composed myself, gave her a few more seconds, then I walked back into the room, casual and humming a tune under my breath. She looked up with wide eyes, started. Guilty much?
I grinned. “What? Why haven’t you taken the water yet?”
She gave a nervous little laugh. “I was waiting for you.” Bullshit.
But I sat beside her anyway and raised the glass to my lips. I tilted it just enough to make it look real, I even let the water brush my mouth.
Then I set it down and leaned back.
