The words fell out smooth, like I had rehearsed them. Maybe I had… maybe somewhere deep inside I had been planning this since the first time I watched her cry. And I made it sound so convincing that even I almost believed my own lies. I’m too good.

“Fine,” he finally muttered. “How you treat her will determine if you’re serious. And you have to be willing to come over for dinner for my family to meet you and vet you. But if they don’t like you… you back off.”

The Graham mansion. Everything in me twitched at the thought. I had never stepped foot in it, never been invited.

I didn’t like the idea at first, but I smiled. “Sure,” I agreed. “I’ll try my best to get them to like me.”

Liam gave me a tight nod. “Let’s go tell Ava. Together,” he spoke up again. “After that, I’ll tell our family.”

She didn’t look pleased when we told her. In fact, she looked seconds away from bolting.

“Dinner? Why?” Her voice was cautious, eyes darting between the both of us like we were speaking a language that she didn’t understand.

Liam gave me a look and I reached for her hand, ignoring how she flinched at first. “Because I like you. And I want to show your family that I really do and I’m nothing but serious.”

There was no spark in her eyes. No flicker of hope, she didn’t smile nor did she seem excited. All I could see was a wall of suspicion and fear, maybe. Tough crowd, but I don’t care.

I could work with that because this was the chance I had been waiting for.

Later, after practice, Liam corners me again. This time his time was sharper.

“This doesn’t mean that I forgive you, or that I’m okay with any of this. And if you mess up even once, you’re out and I’ll finish what I started.”
