Sienna:
I was halfway through the reports I’d been meaning to finalize when my phone vibrated across the desk. I frowned in confusion before taking a glance at it. No one ever bothered calling me, and for a moment, I feared that something might have happened to Isla.
However, the name flashing on the screen made my heart stutter.
Damon…
I eyed it warily for a second before picking up, already knowing what kind of mood he was in today by the time he opened his mouth. The last thing that I wanted, especially today, was for him to be outside the office again.
This picking up and lunch thing was not in my bucket list when it came to being around him, and knowing that he could put me in that situation, I found myself growing weary of what was to come.
“Tell me you’re not outside my building,” I said, skipping the greeting. “I am not going to skip work for another one of your play dates.”
There was a short pause, then his low, smug voice came through the speaker.
“I’m not technically outside,” he said, and I could practically hear the smirk in his voice. “Just wanted to check up on you. It is not a play date, it was lunch, Sienna.”
“You called me for that?” I leaned back in my chair, biting back a smile. “You’ve never checked up on me in your life. And yes, it is a play date. Lunch in the form of a play date that never existed between us.”
“I’m making changes,” he replied casually. “Much like what you’re referring to as a ‘play date’. The two of us can sit at one table to have lunch together.”
“Mhm.” I rolled my eyes, even as something warm bloomed in my chest. “You miss me already? Lunch together is something that we can have at the pack house. In the dining room, and not necessarily alone. Preferably, we can do it when the whole pack is sitting, and I am sitting the furthest from you as I can.”
“It’s not that early,” he teased. “But yes, I do. And come on, I didn’t bite you when you slept next to me last night, did I?”
The silence that followed was heavier than it should have been. I didn’t know what to say to that, didn’t know if I was even allowed to feel anything about it.
But before I could respond, he added, “I’ll pick you up after work.”
“Damon…”
“No arguments.” His voice was firmer this time, less teasing. “You’ve been working all day, and I want to see you. That’s it.”
I opened my mouth, closed it again, and finally just sighed. “You do realize that we live in the same house, right?” “So? In the same house means that we have more responsibilities, when the two of us are out together, no responsibilities are carried. It is just going to be the two of us, not carrying anything that could be considered as weight in this world.” He said, and I looked away from the desk for a moment, my eyes landing on the parking lot where he was waiting for me yesterday. A small smile formed on my lips at the memory before I remembered that he was on the other line with me, clearly waiting for my response.
“Fine. But I’m not changing. I’m in office clothes.” I said, hoping that he would go back from his decision. He clearly didn’t.
“You could be in a paper bag and I’d still want to see you,” he murmured, and this time, I was the one who had to look away to hide the ridiculous smile tugging at my lips. The man couldn’t see me, but I couldn’t help but blush at his words.
I kept walking, ignoring the feeling that I was having. Ignoring the building up of anger that was threatening to rise in my throat.
My steps faltered the second my eyes landed on the figure standing at the head of the long table.
The one man that I did not expect to see standing in front of,e…
Slick black hair. Dark tailored suit. The unmistakable aura of a man used to owning every room he stepped into. The unmistakable man who used to break everything that was in his path. The same man who wanted nothing more than to ruin and see me dead…
“Miss De Luca,” Giovanni D’Angelo greeted, his lips curving into a slow, knowing smile. “What a lovely surprise.”
I stood still, heart pounding.
What the hell was he doing here?
“You…”
“Do come in. I do believe that we have our meeting to start with…”
