Sienna:

I stood frozen just inside the doorway of the conference room, every instinct in me screaming for me to turn around and walk right back out. But I couldn’t. Not with Giovanni’s eyes locked on mine.

“Please,” he said smoothly, gesturing to the seat across from him. “Don’t let me interrupt your work day. But I do believe that you should have known that the two of us have been scheduled a meeting.”

I clenched my fists to steady the slight tremble in them and slowly walked toward the table. My heels echoed a little too loudly in the suddenly suffocating silence of the room. I did my best to remain calm despite my racing heart. I did my best not to show him that I was frightened, but I knew that he could read. Through my gaze, I knew that he could read. My body language. And to make matters worse, he could hear my heartbeat.

The other chairs were empty. It was just him and me. I studied his expression for a moment and I could tell that he was looking at me. I hang me. He was far too amused by this.

My pulse roared in my ears. “Where’s the rest of the team? If I was scheduled a meeting, I would assume that there

would be a team within.”

“They’re not coming,” he replied, his voice calm, polite, the way only a predator could manage before striking. “ This isn’t a business meeting, Sienna. You should have understood that a long time ago. You know the second you walked inside this room and yet here you are standing asking me this question.”

I slowly sat down, back stiff. “What is the meaning of this, Giovanni?”

“I see that we are on first name basis. Good. Then I would be able to speak freely just as I assume you would want to.” Giovanni leaned back in his chair, his arms folding loosely over his chest. “I just wanted a word. You’ve been hard to get a hold of. With all the security that is roaming around you, I figured that the one way for me to be able to do so was lure you in with a job offer.”

“I would not have anything to say to a man like you, regardless of what you might think,” I replied, my voice sharp. I did my best not to gulp it upon realizing that this job was simply because he was the one who had offered it. He had instructed them to call me. It was not based on the qualifications, no matter how poor they were, that I sent. 1

He chuckled softly. “You’ve grown braver since I last saw you. I am impressed. Is it because you’re growing stronger or is it because you are growing closer to the alpha? Do you really believe that Damon Lockwood is going to be faithful to you? That he is going to spare you a second glance? That he won’t tire of you soon enough?”

I didn’t respond.

“I heard you’ve been doing quite well,” he said, voice still unnervingly pleasant. “Working. Training. Living in Damon Lockwood’s house.” His eyes narrowed just slightly. “Sleeping in his bed. The two of you have been growing intimate I would assume. Do you plan on giving him a second child? Something to stabilize your position? I will admit my daughter has failed to do so. Had she given him a child, she wouldn’t be in this situation. Alas, she failed at that.”

I refused to give him the satisfaction of a flinch. “What do you want, Giovanni?”

He tilted his head, studying me. “To remind you that I’m watching. To remind you that I’m still the one playing the cards, and to remind you that you are nothing more than a pawn in the game that I’m playing.”

“Is that a threat?” I asked, doing my best to stand strong.

He turned and left me standing there, heart racing, hands shaking, cold sweat breaking out along my spine.

As soon as the door shut behind him, I reached for my phone.

Damon.

I didn’t care if I interrupted him.

I didn’t care if he was in a meeting.

He needed to know.

Now.
