Damon:

The second I picked up the phone and heard the panic in Sienna’s voice, I was already grabbing my keys.

She didn’t have to explain. She didn’t have to beg.

Just the sound of her breath trembling over the line, the unspoken fear in the way she said my name, it was enough to set my blood on fire.

I drove faster than I should have, not caring that I barely had time to process my morning with Lysandra or the fact that I’d left the office without a word. None of it mattered anymore.

Right now all I cared about was my mate’s safety.

And when Giovanni had just made it clear he was still playing games with me, using her as the pawn. I knew that it was going to be impossible for me to stand my ground without reacting.

I didn’t knock when I reached the top floor of the building. I slammed the door to her office open and found her standing by the window, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, shoulders stiff. She turned at the sound, her eyes locking onto mine, and for a second, just a second, I hated that she looked relieved to see me.

I hated that she felt like she was in danger, too much danger for her to be able to stand on her own.

I should’ve never let it get this far.

I should have never let her stay in a place where I knew she could be in danger. I should have looked into it. I should have sent security after her just to stand lurking around to watch over her, to make sure that nothing happened to her.

“Sienna,” I said, walking in and shutting the door behind me. “What the hell did he say to you? Did he hurt you?” She turned away from me. “Enough.’

“Don’t do that.” I walked to her. I put my hand on her shoulder, turning her to face me, my heart aching for the fact that she looked as frightened as she was. “Don’t shut down now. Whatever he did, I’m going to put a stop to it. But you need to talk to me. You need to tell me what happened.”

Her body trembled. “He threatened me.”

“Of course he did.” I cursed under my breath. “What did he say?”

“That I was your weakness. That he’s watching. That if you don’t put me in my place, he will.” Her voice cracked, and I saw her blink rapidly to hold back the tears. “He mentioned Isla. He knows I won’t run because of her. He knows that you are not allowing me to take her with me and he’s using that to his own advantage against me.”

I gritted my teeth, my fists curling at my sides. “I’m going to kill him.”

“No,” she snapped, finally turning toward me. “That’s what he wants. He wants to provoke you, Damon. He wants you to lose control so he can use it against you. Against the pack. Against your family. He’s going to end up putting your life on the line and I cannot afford in doing so. But you were right about something. I shouldn’t have worked here. I’m just waiting for them to sign the resignation letter. I’m pretty sure that you already told them that I’d be applying for it. He made the offer to simply leave me here. He knew that I was not going to turn it down one way or the other. He has eyes and ears within the pack, he knows what I’m doing, he knows what we are doing and he’s doing his best to trample with information that he has.”

My jaw clenched. “He threatened you. He looked you in the eye and…”

“I’m taking you home,” I said finally. “Now.”

She nodded, no argument. No fight.

But I saw it in her eyes, she wasn’t doing it for herself.

She was doing it for me. For Isla.

And I knew then that I’d already lost the war I thought I could win.

Because Sienna De Luca wasn’t just a mother to my child.

She was everything I never thought I could have.

And Giovanni… just made it painfully clear how much I had to lose.
