Damon:
The building had begun to settle for the evening. Most of the staff had gone home, leaving the air in the tower thick with silence, the kind that wasn’t peaceful but… heavy. Something about today felt off. And I knew exactly what, who, it was…
Lysandra.
The one person that I did not expect to find myself thinking of, I was here, being worried and concerned.
I’d seen the look in Sienna’s eyes when she mentioned her earlier. She hadn’t said it to gain my sympathy, and there wasn’t judgment in her voice, either. It was something else. Worry? Maybe. But deeper than that. Something that I couldn’t wrap my fingers about no matter how hard I tried to do so.
So, after finishing up with the remaining documents in my office, I found myself walking toward Lysandra’s door, even though I wasn’t sure why. My chest ached, and for a moment, I debated on whether or not to step back, to leave her alone, not to approach.
I stopped at the threshold.
The door was cracked.
She hadn’t bothered closing it or she forgot about it being open completely.
And inside, I heard it, soft, muffled crying. Not the theatrical kind she was known for. No, this was real. Guttural. Shaky. Broken. And she was trying to hide it. She was doing her best to try and hide.
I stepped in.
She didn’t see me at first, curled in the chair behind her desk, her face hidden behind her hands. The sound she made as she tried to muffle her sob was one I never imagined I’d hear from her. Not Lysandra. Not the girl who was raised to be steel in heels. The girl who always stood tall, glaring and looking down at those who surrounded her. She had done her best to try and hide her pain for so long, even faked it when she couldn’t feel anything. to see her being genuine… this wasn’t something that I expected.
“Lysandra,” I said quietly.
Her head snapped up, eyes rimmed in red. Her heart raced against her chest, and it was as if my presence here alone was enough to trigger her.
“What do you want?” she spat, instantly back in defense mode. “Come to gloat again? To throw more of your little Omega’s success in my face? If that is the case, then get the hell out.”
I didn’t react. “I heard you. That’s all. And I didn’t come to gloat. I don’t gloat. I do not need to do so.”
She laughed bitterly. “You didn’t come to gloat, Damon? Please. You’ve done everything but print flyers to show the world how easily you replaced me. You might say that you do not gloat, but that is all you do.”
“I never asked for a comparison,” I said, stepping into the office, closing the door halfway. “You were the one who started competing with Sienna. She never once tried to take your place. She never tried to put you in a position where you were just going to be thrown away.”
“She didn’t have to!” she snapped, standing now, storming around the desk. “She didn’t have to try! You gave it to her! Just like that. Your home, your shares, your attention… your heart. She managed to claim everything. You gave her everything, without her even asking, without her trying.”
I froze.
Her breath hitched. Her lips trembled. I took a breath as I looked at her, not saying a word as I knew that she still had a lot to say.
“I did everything I could to make you love me. To make your mother proud. To be the Luna everyone expected me to be. And you…” her voice cracked. “You never even saw me. And suddenly you just saw her. Suddenly she was your center, your world, everything that you could have ever asked for. Suddenly all you see, all you want is just her.”
I took a breath, stepping closer, unsure of what to say. “It should not have been this way. You shouldn’t have reacted the way that you did. Our relationship was one. The two of us somehow managed to maintain it for a long time. But you know very well that there was never a spark between us.”
“It’s your fault,” she whispered. “All of it. You ruined me, Damon. There once was a spark. The two of us were living together, being happy together. Until she came back with that child.”
But that victory lasted all of three seconds.
Sienna stepped into the room with a cup of coffee in her hand. Her eyes moved over the scene, not with shock, but with something worse; understanding.
“To think I had a moment of pity for you,” she said coolly, setting the cup down on the table by the door. “To think for a moment, I did sympathize with you.”
Lysandra’s smug expression faltered.
“I thought, just for a second, maybe you weren’t as broken as you pretend to be,” Sienna added. “But I guess I was wrong.’
“Sienna…” I started.
But she already turned her back, walking away before either of us could stop her.
Her words stayed in the air like smoke.
Lysandra stepped back from me, realization dawning in her eyes.
She hadn’t won anything.
And I had just lost more than I could handle.
