Hayley and Fanny stood in the doorway, arms crossed in perfect unison, their eyes glinting with amusement.

Ruby’s mouth twitched. *Great, another pair of troublemakers.*

Hayley sauntered over, clicking her tongue. “You all look like a little family of three. Enjoying the food?”

Sylas chewed his pastry with slow deliberation, unfazed by Hayley’s teasing. “Not a family of three,” he corrected coolly. “Mira isn’t here.”

Hayley’s mouth dropped open in an exaggerated ‘O.’ She clapped her hands, but before she could continue her teasing, Ruby cut her off.

“What are you talking about? Since you’re here, sit down and eat with us.” She gestured to the empty chairs.

Fanny waved a hand. “No thanks, we’ve already eaten.”

“Then don’t bother me while I’m eating,” Sylas grumbled. He’d finally managed to get some alone time with Ruby—never mind the kid playing third wheel—and he wasn’t about to tolerate two more interruptions.

Fanny saw the petulant look on his face and grinned. Perhaps spending so much time with Hayley was rubbing off on her; she was starting to enjoy a little mischief herself.

“Ruby, when you’re done, there’s something we need to discuss. Or we can talk while you eat,” Fanny said, looking directly at Ruby but keeping an eye on Sylas, who, as expected, looked even more annoyed.

“No! We’ll talk after we eat!” he declared, slapping the table.

The next second, Ruby shoved a container packed full of food into his hands. “Take Asher and go eat somewhere else. I have business to attend to.”

Sylas was speechless.

Hayley, watching his face darken, burst into peals of laughter.

Asher, by contrast, was perfectly behaved. He took his portion and stood waiting patiently for Sylas.

“Go on,” Ruby urged, frowning.

Sylas let out a huff, shot a final glare at Fanny and Hayley, and begrudgingly shuffled out of the office.

“What is it?” Ruby asked, pushing her own breakfast aside to give the two women her full attention.

“It’s nothing urgent. You can eat while we talk,” Fanny said, her tone much gentler now.
